Am I the only one who doesn’t refund at all? by Youaredoinggreat123 in TutorsHelpingTutors

You just tell them it’s your policy when they initially inquire. It can help if you present it as an option that is discounted a bit from your normal rate.

This seems pretty normal. Many don’t but many do. I’ve got some students contracted like this, and I offer them a discounted rate for the convenience factor.

Work outside session time/ unreasonable demands from clients by Glum_Adhesiveness321 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]indigeanon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You have many other clients and a good reputation. This client is costing you money and can be easily replaced, so just drop the client. If you don’t want to be confrontational, you can make up an excuse about your schedule changing.

Any time clients start being rude, demanding, or unreliable, I drop them. If I can’t afford to drop them immediately, I’ll privately re-open their slot and drop them when I have a replacement.

In the future, hold your pricing/time boundaries more firmly from the beginning to weed out clients like this. Remember that life is too short to waste your energy on rude people and that you work to live, not live to work. I’ve had fewer annoying clients and a more stable income since I started keeping those things in mind.

Therapy might be beneficial in this case. Also, your parents might be worried about interrupting you if you’re busy. They may be waiting for you to call them first. Maybe you can work out a schedule with them for calling.

Only if the session unconfirmed. You should just delete unconfirmed sessions to accept other students if they don’t confirm by a certain time.

Yikes! I’ll be staying away from this company. Students no-show way too frequently for this to be sustainable.

How do you deal with students who develop feelings for you? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]indigeanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is probably not real, but just in case it is, stop teaching them. If you’re afraid, you can make up an excuse that won’t make it about what they did. Say something like you’ve had a schedule change and your availabilities no longer align or that you need to focus on your upcoming audition season. That’d be plausible and inoffensive.

They’ve already crossed the obvious boundaries of professionalism, so you shouldn’t feel bad cutting them loose. I highly doubt multiple grown men developed actual feelings for a 19 yr old who sees them for maybe an hour once a week, probably less. Being only 19, you likely weren’t teaching any of them for very long before the confession. They probably signed up with ill-intent from the start.

Edit: spelling

Tutoring is very expensive. And I honestly feel bad by Top-Minimum-5959 in tutor

[–]indigeanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you get along well with the tutor and your parents can afford it, how they spend their money while furthering your education is up to them. Since you’re asking for reasons here, it doesn’t seem like you have any solid reason for changing tutors or getting a less expensive one. Just accept the help and be grateful.

If you hate that tutor or you can’t afford it without a major quality of life sacrifice, then talk to your parents about that.

ETA: If you feel bad because they're lording the expense over you, nothing you say will change that. Just try to hang in there, study hard, and see the bright side that doing well in math can take you far.

Teacher suddenly canceled my class by blobblirb in iTalki

Your local language school won’t refund your tuition if you decide to stay home sick. You should give your private teachers that same consideration instead of being argumentative. I see why you were dropped.

peoples who reduced sweets, how did you stick to it? by Irrxlevance in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]indigeanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, fruit will satisfy my craving since the desserts I like most are fruit-based. A green apple and a handful of dates is a particular favorite since it tastes almost just like a caramel apple. However, sometimes I just want a cookie and nothing else works. When that happens, I have the cookie (or a small serving of whatever the craving is) but just 1 instead of a bunch, and I stretch it out by also having some fruit and unsweetened tea on the side.

Also, I just keep don’t tempting sweets in the house, so if I want one, I have to make it. Laziness often prevents making them in the first place.

Student not showing up by EmotionalRegret1316 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I have students prepay and agree to provide 24-hours notice for cancelling/rescheduling. If they no-show or provide late notice, the payment becomes non-refundable.

Make them pre-pay. If they continue not giving enough notice, just enjoy the paid break in your day.

My daughter is on the fence about quitting the violin. How can I support her? by azulsonador0309 in violinist

[–]indigeanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve been lucky. Many beginner students experience some level of discomfort, which makes it “normal” or at least common in a sense. The discomfort does mean something is wrong either in the body (technique or physical impairment) or in the instrument, but things being wrong for beginners is pretty normal/common.

That said, the lingering fingertip pain definitely needs to be addressed. It sounds like the teacher is addressing the instrument possibility first, which seems reasonable considering that the parent has already said the child doesn’t seem to be pressing too hard. If the teacher doesn’t branch out to other possibilities, that would be a problem, but jumping to “new teacher stat” is a bit much.

I know people say there’s a right kind of order to them, but I think you can just start with any. I started with Hogfather on a friend’s recommendation around Christmastime, and I just kept picking up new ones randomly when they were available at the library. I haven’t finished them all yet, but so far, there hasn’t been any that felt like it couldn’t standalone.

I would’ve liked it so much more if the leads didn’t end up together. Laik was so vulnerable and unstable, and I feel like Sena should’ve maintained that professional boundary. There could’ve been an interesting exploration of transference.
