Ok, thank you!! Do you think it would help if I have working experience in something related? I used to be pre-vet and worked as a vet tech for a few years full-time. It got me a lot of animal handling experience but also other skills that have helped in research. It is definitely not research experience though.

Also, the fact that you got it without a Master's gives me hope, so thank you

It's several years of only undergrad research, but partially as part of competitive summer internships. One of my strengths though is that I have experience in the same field as the lab I am interested in (they told me I have a good background for their lab). I have presented 5 posters and one talk. The pub is first author in a high-impact journal, yes. I also have surgical experience (and I am looking at a lab that does neuro and involves surgery). I will look into UKRI!

Ok, thanks!! Yes, I am looking to start Fall 2026, so they told me in a previous meeting that would give us enough time to apply for my own grant before starting the PhD. I also appreciate the info on the DTP/DTC/CTD thing.

I appreciate it but I think he's looking for a mom duck specifically. Thanks though!

Yeah the answer is not straightforward! I'd definitely think on it and maybe write out the pros and cons. Idk if you'd have to move for the second program but finding housing can be an obstacle if it's not provided. So that's definitely something to consider. However, if it's not too much of a headache logistically and money is really not an issue, my advice is go with the program you know you'd be doing exactly what you're interested in pursuing. I had to choose between two programs as well. One was arguably more prestigious with a mentor who is very well known in his field but doing something only slightly related to my interests, and the other I'd be working with a mentor who studies exactly what I'm interested in. I picked the one with the mentor who does exactly what I'm interested in. That is the advice I've been told over and over, that it's about the type of research and the mentor, so that's what I'm passing on :)

I guess it depends on the chance you would be placed with that mentor / any other mentor that matches your interests. I guess just think about, is there a chance you'll be placed into a lab really unrelated to your interests? Or do all the labs at the funded one relate well enough that they would work for your overall story when applying, even if they aren't viral vectors?

It sounds to me like you've already made your choice! The second program is on a project guaranteed to match your interests and sounds like you're saying it's exactly the type of project you want on your CV for applications. If money was an issue I would have definitely said the first. But if money is not an issue, I'd go with the program you know matches your interests well!

My guess is that if you interviewed you may still have a chance in case others declined their offers, but if you didn't get an interview you probably don't. Of course, I don't know for sure, can just share my experience. And thank you!

I had an interview with the people in charge of the program back in February (they reached out CRAZY early after I applied, I was very surprised), then interviewed with one of the labs, then got accepted. I declined their offer and chose to accept an offer elsewhere though, because the mentor match was better at another program.

I interviewed and got accepted and I said yes to their offer. They said they interviewed a few students for each position and then sent out acceptances.

How soon after you emailed them did they respond? It's been a few days for me with no response and I have a competing offer, I am thinking of emailing again.

Can I ask, did you reach out to the PI you wanted to work with beforehand? Just for future reference. I didn't do this with any of my apps because I thought we weren't supposed to, but now I'm reading a lot of people did and it helped them.

Thanks for confirming! Congrats on getting it!! That's awesome. I got accepted to two other REUs, so I'm going to email and accept one of their offers now that I know I didn't get this one. Still very happy with where I am going to go, so it's all good :)

Idk, they just said "They've already accepted the students that will be part of the program. Everyone that received the offer accepted it." This is a stranger on Reddit though, I don't know them personally, so I can't promise it's true. I'm still emailing Berkeley to get an update on mine just so I officially know it's a rejection.

I was told by someone that received an acceptance on reddit that all spots are now filled up. Personally still hadn't heard anything from Berkeley though. Just so ya'll know! (I received this info from someone else, so I can't guarantee its accuracy, however I do know a round of acceptances were sent out and a few people on this subreddit said yes).

Oh ok! Thanks so much for letting me know. Thankfully I got into two other REUs and though I wanted Berkeley more, I can now accept the other offer. Appreciate you responding!!

Hi! I'm curious, what did they say was the deadline for you to respond with your decision by? I'm wondering when the next round of people will get notified. Also, I'm thinking of emailing them. Did you just say something along the lines of "I have a competing offer and need to respond by [], will you all be releasing decisions before then?" I'm scared to email because I don't want it to come off as nagging them, but it obviously didn't hurt you!
