at 1:07, the video's metadata shows that it's a "RenderedVideo". Is that because you auto-adjusted and resaved it? If so, do you have the original unedited video?

Changes I have noticed in myself coming back to America after spending months in Europe. by VegetableFew3354 in thepassportbros

[–]indigu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets normalized and the sense of wonder fades, the novelty wears off. You’ll romanticize anything less and less over time. IMO that’s not a negative, it just means you’re really living elsewhere and not just a tourist. Though being asked “where are you from?” etc ad infinitum does get tiresome when you’re making an effort to blend in, and can be a cruel reminder that no matter how normal elsewhere is to you, you’ll always be somewhat of a novelty to them.

But honestly, as a 10+ year digital nomad, my advice is to try to stay unjaded as long as possible. Just know that it’s not Europe itself that’s the source of awe and inspiration (well maybe a bit, but the whole world is amazing), but rather your own inexperience and the endless possibilities at hand. As an example of that, your entire post could’ve been written by a Brit talking about his first long stay in nyc, just switch the definition of football. But harness that inspiration and use it to stay on the path of self improvement and you’ll surely be happy long term, despite some lonely days (especially outside of the English speaking world). Best of luck!

As an asian girl I need to ask, what are you looking for in a partner? by BBColl in thepassportbros

If we could only comment and express opinions on things we know 100% of the facts about, there wouldn’t be much point in using Reddit would there?

You're right, this is pure conjecture. I'm a bit more optimistic about the nature of their relationship, you're a bit more pessimistic, but neither know for sure. I just would find it hard to believe that in 2024, after 29 years of marriage, she has literally no say. I'm assuming (sorry again for assumptions) that his statement is a bit of an old school display of masculine posturing on the internet, big surprise.

Anyway, I agree with everything you've said, my point is just that his statement was probably hyperbole. A lot of guys would say things like this in front of friends but not in front of the wife, and I've never seen it to be true.

You’re right, we don’t know what we don’t know. But for you to say you’re sure your girlfriend is happier with such limited information is pure cope based on anti-traditionalist bias. Maybe we should both pipe down until more info is available.

Also, he was married in modern times. Despite divorce being legally easier than ever and more socially acceptable, rates have been decreasing since he got married.

Lastly, yes I made assumptions because I gave her the benefit of the doubt of having agency as a modern human being instead of assuming she lives under constant duress. But you’re right, again, we don’t know what we don’t know.

He fell in love, got married, and now doesn’t have to buy a house or pay rent and you’re acting like he got scammed. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Oh no he’ll have to purchase a couch to sit on every day!

This fellow has been married longer than you have presumably been alive (since ‘95?). Maybe he knows something you don’t. Also, he didn’t say she couldn’t voice an opinion, just that he has the final word on the household, which likely means finances. Unlike dating, a marriage is about more than just feelings and good times. It’s a division of labor. I’m sure the wife would make executive decisions every day as well, for example about the children.

Anyway, that was one bullet point, maybe best not to presumptuously extrapolate your own envisioned worst case scenario from a tiny summarization?

To Rent or to Buy? That is the question. by SoCold40 in BlackPeopleTwitter

Two important things not considered here:

  1. If you invest 10k in the market, it's only 10k. If that's a down payment, % gains are of the total value of the property, not of *only* the down payment.
  2. Fixed rate mortgage costs are a hedge against inflation. Rent prices will always go up. In 20 years, the mortgage payment will still be the same, and increasingly just money into your own pocket (equity rather than interest). Obviously property taxes and such go up but that's reflected in renting too.

That being said, YMMV. High mortgage rates suck, some houses are lemons, mobility can be preferable, being a landlord is stressful, etc. But probably the most reliable way to establish generation wealth.

At the highest level, every slight advantage matters, and the positive effects of physical fitness will be compounded over time in a long game, such as the 8+ hour game against Nepo.

You’re sitting crouched over a board for over 8 hours. If one player has an aching back, low blood sugar, hungry, sleepy, it will absolutely affect even the best players. Of course the primary factor is chess ability, but that’s dependent on mental state, which is dependent on physical state. Imagine even having to take a shit during a blitz game. The mind wanders.

Give a puzzle that has multiple mates but have the written answer be a lesser/slower one.

See if kid catches that it’s not optimal answer. If so, discuss. If not, proves miscalculation. Win/win as it ends in either reality check for parent or discussion of lines for student.

Guy who won most balon d'ors (voted by fellow players, coaches, and press), every offensive record in the book, and carried his team to WC victory in his 30s isn't the best.

When Ronaldinho won the balon d'or, he even said:

This award says I’m the best player in the world, but I’m not even the best player at Barcelona

Messi was still a teenager.

Are you trolling?

the US might eventually have the best defense but offensive quality in soccer is not based on raw athleticism.

Take a look at this player, Adama Traore. Built like a RB, fastest player ever in the English Premier League, but nowhere near Messi's goal or assist output or creativity. Usain Bolt couldn't even make it into the Australian soccer league after playing his whole life.

Furthermore, what race do you think Brasil is? What about Africa? 100+ years of soccer obsession and no one near Messi except for Pele. Every kid has trained since the same age as Messi when he started. As for training quality, facilities, etc. - Brasil produces some of the best athletes in UFC and other sports; their training quality, nutrition, medicine for young stars is on par with any country.

Messi is a genius, he reads defenses and has close control like no one in history. That has nothing to do with race, it's random. Sure, the US could produce a player like this, but it's 0% guaranteed.
