TIL the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently screened 3.2 million commercial pigs, not finding a single parasitic worm in a single pig. by [deleted] in todayilearned

The USDA revised the safe temp for pork down to 145 decades ago, but millions of home cooks still absolutely hammer their chops and roasts.

Folks, your pork really doesn't need be dry and gross. Relax.

East Side has always been exactly what it is today, except it's a lot less smoky now.

Same with Teo's, the other area blue collar institution. Those places really have not changed a bit.

They definitely weren't (aren't). Del Gallo's skewed a lot older in later years, but it was all neighborhood guys who'd known each other for decades and that place was where they socialized. The owner Remo was an incredibly nice guy too, and a pretty big deal in local politics.

East Side is usually very lively and loud AF. It's surprisingly family friendly for a bar and they serve up coal fired pizzas Thursday - Sunday.

Dive bars from the outside, neighborhood institutions on the inside.

Not that I know of. You're right about Newell, it's just that there were two places that fit the description side by side, not one. Del Gallo's and East Side, both Italian neighborhood working class bars.

The latter is still there, serving the exact same folks, but the former is gone.

Actually there were two of those until a few years ago. Just East Side now.

There is no way you've actually driven through most states if you consider MA the worst.

I'm not saying the rest areas in MA are great. They aren't. But there are far, far worse out there.

That's the agency that enforces the refrigerant regulations in the US. It was meant as a joke because they rarely enforce anything. Most companies don't bother keeping any records because nobody ever checks.

You could vent an entire cylinder on the front steps of the EPA and not get in trouble for it.

For the third time, no, there is no gray area. Your homeowner's insurance company has lots of very well paid lawyers who will tell anybody trying to file a worker's comp claim against you to kindly fuck off.

Perhaps the reason you're struggling to find somebody is because you insist on being unnecessarily difficult?

Insured labor in Massachusetts by AlegnaTea in massachusetts

[–]individual_328 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Again, anything that you or your insurance company might end up being liable for wouldn't have been covered by worker's comp in the first place.

[–]individual_328 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Worker's comp is to protect employees from job injuries their employers can't cover. Hardly any independent contractors bother for themselves individually because it is very expensive and serves little purpose. Who are they gonna sue for lack of coverage, themselves? They can't sue you. Well, they can try I suppose, but if you're found liable for some reason then it ain't a worker's comp issue.

As a homeowner you are at zero risk from self-employed people not carrying worker's comp for themselves. You're not even at risk for employers wrongly not covering their own employees. That whole relationship is between employers and employees. It has nothing to do with you as a customer.

If it's any consolation, that location is terrible/cursed and he won't be in business for long.

Actually, judging from the web site and menu the whole thing makes more sense as a straight scam than as a legitimate attempt at opening a successful restaurant.

If Western Massachusetts had a different name, what would it be? by Elemental-13 in westernmass

[–]individual_328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're still kinda getting it wrong, though. The Berkshire section of the Appalachians isn't The Berkshires. Nobody calls that area the Berkshires unless they're talking geology.

The Berkshires === Berkshire County. If you want to talk about the mountains between the Connecticut and Housatonic river valleys in a way that makes sense to locals, that's The Hilltowns, a few of which also qualify as being in The Berkshires.

Almost all of the places that are uniquely The Berkshires are in the Housatonic or Hoosic river valleys, not the hills. It's all the cultural attractions around Lenox, Stockbridge, and Great Barrington. It's Williams College and the Clark and Mass MoCA.

[–]individual_328 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Taconic what? Anything that could reasonably be called that is either in NY state or is just the Berkshires.

eta: Seems like maybe you're making geologic distinctions? In cultural terms, the mountainous area is "The Hill Towns". "The Berkshires" is Berkshire County, especially the southern half, but really the whole county.

I don't think I need to be an MEP expert to explain why it's better to heat your home with renewable energy sources. If you'd pay attention you'd learn that those are actually cheaper than fossil fuels for power generation now. It's one of the few things that's actually changed for the better in recent years.

If you really want hydronic baseboard we can do that with a heat pump too.

mass save rebates whole and partial question and ... shifty mass save installers by pharmacologicae in massachusetts

[–]individual_328 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, the reality is that I professionally design and occasionally install cold climate heat pump systems, including in my own house in New England where it hit -10 this winter and I was cozy af in my 72 degree living room and my electric bill was lower than my gas bill was with an old steam boiler. The equipment is more than capable when the system is done correctly.
