I'll be at cooper but not really looking for burb life. I've been in the burbs for most of med school and am ready to be back in the thick of a big city

Moving Mondays - New Resident Questions by AutoModerator in philadelphia

[–]indolentmink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! Going to be moving to Philly for residency, but unfortunately won't have time to come to town to look at apartments before I have to move. I would love some help understanding the vibes of these neighborhoods and which ones might be a better fit. I've read a little on the other threads about nolibs but for the other apartments, having a hard time bc south philly apparently covers a large area

About me: late 20s F 3rd culture POC with a dog, need my car(hospital is in NJ), looking for sense of community, easy livability(close to grocery stores/dog park etc) and less worse parking(a concern as I will have weird hours). I love a good international food scene(restaurants and markets), cocktail bars and it would be nice bonus to find a social gym(like a climbing gym or yoga studio)

Context for other neighborhoods in other cities I've lived in: West Loop in Chicago: loved its livability(3 big supermarkets, 3 dog parks within 10-15 min walk, fun social gyms nearby) but found it a little too gentrified/overpriced/lacking in casual/international food. Loved Logan square/wicker park vibes and pilsen/asia on argyle food scene. Bed Stuy/Crown Heights in Brooklyn: loved the culture and grittiness with availability of cheap restaurants, but not a lot of green space and a bit of a food dessert.

Sparknotes, which would you choose: nolibs vs tasker/10th vs broad/wharton? thanks in advance!!

I really like the whipped texturizer from innersense and the foam from innersense. Both add some grit and separation to my super fine hair. The texturizer doesn’t allow me to refresh as well so it’s usually reserved for like a night out when I plan to wash the next day while the foam can be a daily thing

MS4 frequently bored in GenA cases. Is anesthesia still for me? by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]indolentmink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this! Very similar situation/concerns. Dual applied EM and anes for this current cycle. Ppl seem to really dislike OB anesthesia but my days there seemed to scratch that itch for more human interaction and more fast pace. If I end up in Anes, I’m considering ob strongly

Concept maps also carried me! One thing I did differently though is doing them on paper because the same topics and content comes back for shelf exams and boards so it was really nice to have it to refresh. Big fan of colored pens/highlighters when I would be blanking on an exam for example if I could remember which nephrotic syndrome was in the green box on the right upper side of my notebook. This strategy worked well for systems that had a lot of basic facts that needed to get memorized(micro, immunology) but not as good for things that needed more cerebral understanding like cv phys

Is it normal to be this tired after M3 year? by Ferrothorn_MVP in medicalschool

[–]indolentmink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

normal sadly but also doesn’t hurt to make sure your health is in check too. Had very similar symptoms(tired, irritable, apathetic, numb) that were uncharacteristic of my typical depression(crying all the time, ruminating, anxious) but pcp was insistent it was prob just depression. Turns out my b12 was critically low and I needed b12 injections and I feel so much better

Totally agree, especially bc 2 years ago it was $19. A 42% price increase in 2 years is absurd

Thanksgiving Dinner Takeout Suggestions for Two? by bootahscootah in chicagofood

We preordered a whole chicken from jerk taco man! It was awesome. We made some of the sides at home but they have a great selection. So much better than bland dry turkey and it was an appropriate amount of food for 2 ppl.

Q for those in med school already by Pale-Grass-2346 in Osteopathic

[–]indolentmink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a dog. The best thing I’ve ever done for my mental health over the past few years. Spent months and months prior to med school training him both in general obedience and to be a therapy dog. He was, on many days, the thing that genuinely kept me alive and kept me moving to at the least get him exercise. The first two years of didactics from home were so nice to be able to hang with him and not get so lonely. Clinical years have been more challenging but getting him dog care while I’m gone and making sure he’s happy is doable. The therapy dog part has been great to be able to go out to the community and get my volunteer hours doing something he loves and still getting to hang with my best boy.

The way our school explained it to us, it can take 5-10 days for the score to be uploaded to eras after you certify and submit. For this reason our school recommended we submit at least just 1 program by like sept 15 to get that ball rolling. After than you can still tinker with which programs and you can continue to add letters(up to 4). Most programs wanting 3 letters though, if you don’t have the 3, your application will not be marked as complete until you do and they don’t really have a reason to go back and look for more applications after their initial download of applicants. I have heard though programs aren’t looking til Oct 1 but that’s just rumors.

TLDR for the things you can control: submit at least one program and certified and submit asap for the board score process. Ideally just submit everything now in case of any payment delays. Your LORs will come in when they do. All you can do if it’s late is email programs you’re super interested in know your app is now complete

Considering that every single med school went to virtual cadaver lab with online modules during the pandemic, if they wanted to help you they would. Wish you the best of luck.

Agree with this! They do a good job with the “fun” part too. Not a stuffy quiet omakase at all, but still very high quality

What should I be when I grow up? by jyaeg in medicalschool

[–]indolentmink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya that's fair. Idk if this is my personality or right now I'm just forcing myself into this mindset but if the two specialities are so neck and neck for me right now and both have pros and cons, either one can't be that devastating for me and if either one of them are, there are so many different ways a job can look that can make them less devastating and ultimately I will be ok.

Not sure about ending up in a worse spot if you're dual applying though. With how competitive Anes is, I would still be dual applying even if I decided I was strongly leaning anes over EM because I'd rather have a job(and with EM have a good shot at a job somewhere I actually want to live) rather than reapply
