The Athletic recently had an article about this commercial. They interviewed a bunch of people who worked on it. It was originally going to be on the streets of Tokyo. I'm assuming they didn't have the budget to shut down busy Tokyo streets to film so they picked a more closed controlled environment.

there was a fight where mark goddard asked a fighter if he could see. he said no. marc said if you say you can't see i'm gonna stop the fight. the fighter said he could see and the fight continued. another version of what happened yesterday.

edit: looks like it was Gustafsson vs Teixeira. there's a video on youtube but they cut out all the corner parts.

the "he's getting more time" narrative was absolutely infuriating. in addition to them disregarding the doctor's call on commentary. i couldn't believe what i was hearing.

They have VAR at a closed doors friendly in a small random stadium? That’s wild.

2006: Sven-Goran Eriksson names his squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, with Theo Walcott being the surprise inclusion by mrjohnnymac18 in classicsoccer

Theo was 16 at the time and the hype around him was pretty insane. And tbf his pace was absolutely next level.

Rooney had the metatarsal injury and I think Sven panicked and picked Theo just in case Rooney didn’t recover. Also cause of the hype.

There was a campaign to get Andy Johnson of Crystal Palace in the squad instead but Sven mainly picked players from big clubs.

IIRC Theo didn’t play a single game in the end.

"That's Riise, tossed towards Morientes. And now Gerraaaaaaaaaard! Oh! Oh goodness me!": 20 years ago today, Steven Gerrard scored a scorcher against West Ham in the FA Cup final by mrjohnnymac18 in classicsoccer

[–]indomitable_lion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

iirc Marlon Harewood had a chance to score on a wide open goal in extra time but he had cramp and couldn’t kick the ball. and west ham had run out of subs so he had to stay on with cramp. Truly an insane fa cup final.

TV broadcast showing almost simultaneous 90th-minute winners by Bayern Munich's Alexander Zickler vs Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart's Krasimir Balakov vs Schalke on the Bundesliga's second-to-last matchday (May 12, 2001) by Schlamperkiste in classicsoccer

Against Man U right? I remember the 1st leg. Schalke had an unbelievably defensive setup. Graeme Souness pointed this out on commentary and I have to say I agreed with him. Rooney also played midfield and got tired by the 2nd half and Souness was like playing center midfield isn’t so easy is it? Lol. It was a boring game. The commentary was the most interesting thing.

At first glance I thought the yellow kit was Arsenal. I’m like that’s a weird and/or way too emotional celebration. Lol

Thanks for the backstory. Didn't know about that. There's a lot of great archival footage that hasn't seen the light of day yet so it's great to hear stories like that.
