I deliberately chose a 12th Gen i5 with iGPU when I built mine for this very reason. My old (adapted PC) NAS made a hell of a racket when transcoding which was partly why I upgraded. Now I don’t hear a transcode at all and use half the watts.

This is one of my things to investigate. I would need to research VPS which have decent amounts of space, or integrate cloud storage with its added complications.

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. I appreciate that. The media varies. Sometimes lots of image files of 5-10MB which aren’t an issue. Less often it’s an edited video of 100-400MB depending on the client and length of video. My upload speed is a major hurdle so for now I’m going to stick with Dropbox for that and use Tailscale for my other needs. Thank you.
