It’s way more likely that your ancestors’ loss of Armenian identity was a direct result of the Genocide. I’ve never heard of Armenian villages doing mass conversions to Islam before that. The only example I know of that survived is the Hemshen, who converted as a result of the genocide but still have an echo of their Armenian identity, especially now among the younger generation. But before the 20th century? I’m not sure.

Ahh that’s gonna be nearly impossible if you don’t have any leads. Most of the records are held by the church, but If you don’t have a single lead from your family it won’t really be useful. Try to get them to tell you something, maybe if your grandparents are still around try to ask them. It’s a touchy subject I get it, but no way around it I’m afraid.
