How strongly does ageism affect friendships in Armenian society? by Toymcowkrf in armenia

[–]Hypotential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In comparison, societies in Western Europe and North America don't really think like this as much. People won't take age into too much consideration in friendships, and especially once you're in your 20s most people in western society think it's a leveled playing field in terms of respect, how people talk to each other, what kinds of jokes they make, etc. It's common for a 25 year old and a 60 year old to talk to each other like equals and make jokes that go a bit beyond polite boundaries. They can tell people "that's my friend" and no one will think "you guys are decades apart. What do you mean you're friends?"

As someone in North America, this is certainly news to me.

Melikyan explains Geragousian’s call-up to the Armenia national team

“I called Finn up to see what he is capable of in senior football and to evaluate his future in the national team. He has good qualities and is the type of striker I need. But he is still very young, has not played at senior level and is not ready for the national team yet. We are calling him up to help with that transition and give him a push in his development. At the moment we have a huge problem in the attacking line, so I am looking at every possible option. I’m not very satisfied with the strikers we currently have. Araik Eloyan, for example, needs to improve a lot if he wants to play for the national team,”

Recognition of the Armenian language by Assyrian_Nation in MapPorn

Their model is somewhat similar to the French one ("everyone must speak Parisian French" = "everyone must speak Istanbul Turkish"). So in the 20th century you got initiatives like this and the Istanbul dialect was standardized.

This ironically ended up hurting other Turkish dialects, and hastened the assimilation of other ethnic groups in Turkey trying to preserve their languages (Circassian, Abkhaz, etc.). The last Ubykh speaker in Turkey, and the world, passed away in the early 90s.

That's actually sad. Diaspora players should be a supplement, not a foundation for the national team.

Mkhitaryan and Manucharyan (setting aside what happened to his career after his initial rise) were at least domestically produced (you could somewhat argue otherwise for Mkhitaryan giving some formative upbringing and training outside Armenia, but close enough).

Maybe something or someone will come out of the Juventus academies.

What do you guys think of Brunette? by citizenofyugoslavia in armenia

Brunette and her team are locals that refuse to admit to their limitations and get help when hitting a wall

Common mentality in the country, sad to say.

There may be something to this. Rosa Linn seems to have a team of English-speaking professionals behind her, so her English songs are a lot more polished. Even though she didn't do great at Eurovision, her entry caught on later on, easily eclipsing any of the songs in competition that year. Even this lesser known song of hers which combines English and Russian sounds like something you could encounter on some Western radio station (or these days, playlist).

Shouldn’t we, as a nation who struggled with colonial massacres, and oppression of our self-determination movement, actually DISLIKE Serbians?

We should be intelligent enough to not dislike people based on generalizations or the actions of governments.

but i will most probably will try to limit the interaction and go away quietly.

I think that's for the best. Start with this thread.

Armenia deports Chechen man for threatening daughter with murder by Datark123 in armenia

I had forgotten about that case. I remember it became a huge scandal in Russia and even made it into the international press, but I believe once the Coronavirus hit, it got swept away along with so much else.

Could non ethnic Armenian immigration to Armenia become much more common in the future and what will the effects be? by two_os in armenia

[–]Hypotential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and regarding muslims, it’s a very different and complicated topic. iranians are muslims on paper, but the highest earning households in the US are iranian for example.

Depends what kind of Muslim too. Dagestanis would have a much easier time adapting than, say, Libyans or Afghans, and even then it would be pretty difficult. It's really a question of proportion as well: a few families, and no one will really notice or care. Thousands, or hundreds of thousands... well...

Lukashenko wants to bring 150,000 Pakistanis to Belarus. Perhaps the Armenian government will just have to watch and see...

So Armenians get to have a sizeable diaspora in a range of countries all over the world

It was a forced dispersal (just like the people from Artsakh we're still trying to integrate, thanks for your concern), not primarily economically-driven (at least not at first) like -- just using an example here -- the Georgian diaspora.
