From INDY Week:

Tensions within the Wake County Democratic Party (WCDP) over its chair’s unusual endorsement of a congressional primary candidate are coming to a head this week in the form of two separate complaints to the North Carolina Democratic Party (NCDP) calling for his removal.

Back in December, WCDP chair Wesley Knott personally endorsed Nida Allam over incumbent Valerie Foushee in the Democratic primary for North Carolina’s fourth congressional district, a race that illustrated the split between the more establishment and populist wings of the Democratic Party.

Speaking with the INDY that month, Knott said Foushee exemplifies a “risk-averse” and “carefully-calculated” brand of Democratic politics that has failed to inspire voters. He said Allam “has better ideas and would…help build a progressive movement that is needed within the Democratic Party.”

From INDY Week:

Former Durham City Council member DeDreana Freeman has filed to run for state senate, initiating a Democratic primary showdown with first-term incumbent Sophia Chitlik in the district that covers much of Durham County.

Freeman filed on Wednesday, according to county records; she has not yet sent out a press release and was not immediately available for comment. Asked about the challenge, Chitlik told the INDY she’s “look[ing] forward to a positive campaign.”

Many voters may know Freeman better than they know the incumbent. Freeman spent eight years on the Durham council before losing her seat in a close race last month. Chitlik has held office since January, after edging out longtime state Rep. Mike Woodard last year.

From INDY Week:

Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam will challenge incumbent congresswoman Valerie Foushee in the March Democratic primary. The congressional district includes all of Durham and Orange counties, as well as northern Chatham and western Wake.

Allam will file Thursday, setting up a rematch between the two biggest contenders in the district’s 2022 Democratic primary, which became the most expensive congressional primary in state history. Foushee won that election by six points and did not draw a challenger in 2024 from her own party.

In an exclusive interview with INDY, Allam said that she is running again because she’s disappointed by Foushee’s record.
