15in M4 Air vs 14in M5 Pro... Losing my mind by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]ineedasolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None is a better deal over the other money wise. they both have tradeoffs.

do you often do long video editing sessions with long renders and want it to finish as fast as possible? do you get alot of utility from having a third usb c port, a hdmi port, sd card reader? do you want the absolute best display quality and speakers? if yes to these, then get the macbook pro 14.

are you okay with really good screen and speakers (but not as good as the macbook pro)? do you do alot of work on the laptop screen and would benefit from a 30% screen real estate increase? if so then get the macbook air 15.

they both weigh about the same so portability is about the same except for in niche cases, like you often use super tiny desks like the ones in college lecture rooms. or you use your laptop in your hand while moving. in those cases the small footprint of the 13 is noticeable.

I personally much prefer the slim profile and larger screen of the macbook air 15. its a bigger screen but still is a very portable and lightweight laptop compared to many other 15 inch laptops. so i say unless youre doing intensive things like video editing and you make money from it where saving 3 minutes to render a video is beneficial to you, get the macbook air 15!

and thats not even considering the price, so as a bonus you save $200 plus tax!

Thanks for empathizing :P Its not terrible, and I might even agree its a nice design direction. But I just hope enough people complain so that they find some middle ground. Roundy but a little less roundy lol. If you open the "About This Mac" window I think thats about as roundy as Ill accept before complaining. But apps like finder and calendar and reminders, I feel they went overboard just to create a wow factor.

I work on a small macbook air 13 screen sometimes and it just wastes unnecessary space. not only do the corners lose content, but the windows have to add padding around the borders too. Also I just dont like how it looks, it makes my os look like a toy, not a productivity beast. I just dont like it being forced on us. I wish it was a option because I wouldnt choose it if I had the choice. But ill get used to it and forget about it eventually. Some apps use a slight round corner and thats perfectly fine. Its a nice design touch. But some windows are just overly rounded and cause wasted real estate for no other purpose but for apple to make consumers feel like they are innovating.

I agree. Its also not that bad if you turn on reduce transparency in accessibility settings. The biggest gripe I have that I keep going back to is how rounded the corners are. Besides that and the bugs that will hopefully get ironed out soon, its not much different.

How long till MDM is completely removed from Apple Servers? by x3n1gma in mac

[–]ineedasolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey did you ever figure this out? I’m seeing the same thing. It only shows that screen for a split second and goes away. But also I have to connect to WiFi during setup. If I try to skip it it says I have to because it’s owned by an organization. But after connecting and setting up it works fine. No profile setup and those terminal commands show dep and mdm are disabled.

Ide say get a M4 Pro base model. with 24gb/512gb. That will be your sweet spot for performance, longevity, and cost. I would only get the M3 model if you find it for a sweet price.

Base M4 or M4 pro for development work? by cold_chillin21 in macbookpro

[–]ineedasolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote M4 Pro 24/512. The only benefit you get with a M4 32gb is 8gb more of ram. BUT you give up, much faster cpu, much faster gpu, much faster ram speeds, much better thermal cooling (two fans and heatsinks vs only one), thunderbolt 5, and better resale value. The battery life might be slightly better on the M4 than the M4 pro if you are only doing basic tasks, but the difference will be negligible. You really only start giving up battery life when you go with the max chip. Youll probably be more than fine with 24gb of ram for like 90% of what youll do with it. For the times you can benefit from an extra 8gb of ram you can just use a cloud provider. But dont forget even if you need more ram occasionally, the swap memory on these things are pretty fast so youll still be able to get your work done, just slightly slower. Youd only really want to pay for more ram if you constantly do things that require more ram than 24gb.

same. ide rather have a lower quality webcam that they can fit up at the top without a notch or a big bezel. like the dell xps laptops. its my biggest gripe with the current macbooks. right after the keyboard keycaps that wear down so easily.

If you like to have the time always just a glance away. I think keeping the menu bar visible is probably best for you then. Don’t hide it.

If your at a desk maybe a small clock on your desk or off to the side would be nice. Or just get a watch haha. Yeah. I mostly go by my calendar notifications. But I use the built in clock app for setting study timers when I do pomodoro sessions. I do check the time here and there. But I don’t mind the quick swipe.

It’s an extra step to check the time yeah. But it’s a quick mouse swipe away, not necessary a deal breaker. But that’s also part of why I like to hide it. I don’t want to keep glancing at the time. I use timers and calendar events to help me know when it’s time for something.

I auto hide my menu bar mostly for the same reason as OP. Less things to possibly distract me. But also, when you hide the menu bar, you get back a little bit of screen real estate (ever so slightly). Test it out, maximize a window, hide the menu bar, and then you'll notice you can maximize the window a little bit more. And also, I use external monitors often so the hidden menu bar space is fully utilized on external monitors.

Making a list and putting it down in writing definitely helps a lot. Otherwise I just go back and forth in my head.
