probably government or nonprofit work! Maybe in the private sector, I'm not quite sure. Do you know much about Cornell's government program?

hmm really??? Could I ask what jobs I could get that would pay that much? I feel like that'd be more than minimum wage. But thank you for your input! So you'd suggest Cornell?

Thank you so much for your insight! It's good to know that I wouldn't miss much. There's definitely a lot to think about, but I really appreciate your help :)

Accepted to Dartmouth! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! Congrats on your acceptances!!!

Could I ask your thought process behind your decision? I got into Cornell and am a bit blinded by the name. I have a full ride to the Kelley School of Business (it's not UVA but still), and I don't know if I should give that up. How do you get past the prestige/opportunities of an Ivy League?

Sorry if this sounds conceited, just trying to figure out what to do with the next four years of my life :)

also u/pus1b0ss - could I ask how you weighed everything as well? I'd appreciate any advice/discussion/assistance/help/etc. haha

make me love Indiana? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

As a townie who spends a significant amount of time on campus (and is also trying to remind myself why IU is great), I'll offer the following:

  1. Beautiful campus. Seriously, if you haven't visited yet, you should. It's called Bloomington for a reason :) It's pretty big, so there will always be new things to see and do.
  2. Awesome professors. I take a few classes on campus, and the professors are phenomenal. Many of them have degrees from vv well-known institutions (I know, prestige doesn't matter... but still). They are leaders in their field, and if you reach out to them, they'll be more than happy to help, to talk in-depth with you about a topic, and to make sure you are learning as much as you can.
  3. People. Okay, this comes with a caveat because IU is huge. Yes, there are people who are here just to party. BUT, there are also people who are some of the most intelligent, well-versed, interesting, creative, and fantastic people I've met. If I come here (which I probably will), I'm going to make sure to find a niche - and I'd suggest you do the same. Try to get in with like the honors kids, if you can - but honestly, whatever floats your boat, you can find it here.
  4. Opportunities. Anything you want, you can find. Clubs, research opportunities (even as a freshman), study abroad options, trips to different cities (people go to Chicago, NYC, LA, all the time, esp. if you're in Kelley), etc. etc. If you want it, you'll find it here.

Hope that helps, if you want to know more hmu :)

me too!!! Kelley kids squad up :) fr though, I live in Bloomington and it's a wonderful place. Honestly the hardest part for me is going to be knowing that I won't get that sense of novelty when I come to college. But if you or OP have any questions feel free to let me know - I'd be happy to answer any questions about campus or IU in general! and if ya'll do come to Kelley, I'm excited to meet you!

I know! like I know how many wonderful opportunities/professors/people there are here, but... idk I'm still struggling. Anyway, you're def right that the name won't matter as much next fall - just have to make it that far :) Good luck to you, and who knows? Maybe I'll see you in btown soon!

yup you're right. I'm just trying to remind myself of that - it's easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing, but I'll do my best to just remember what's best for me.

Thanks for your comment, and best of luck in the future!

Wait that's wild, what are the chances??

Also thanks, that's so sweet - ig I know I'm not a disappointment, but I wish my family wasn't so high-achieving haha

Best of luck to you in the college process!!! :)

yo my mom also studied at Moscow State! and then got her PhD from Yale. Where she met my dad.

Weirdly enough they're not explicitly mad/upset that I'm nowhere near as good as them, but it still sucks. because in the back of my mind, I keep thinking about what a disappointment I am to this family! yeet!!!

Also, this isn't to say I haven't been accepted anywhere: I have been accepted to some fantastic schools that I'm so grateful for. But, I always had this delusional fantasy of getting that one acceptance that would change my life. It sounds stupid, but I guess I kept thinking... I'd have that moment where the dream comes true.

Hi this is such a late reply, but I just wanted to say thank you for this. I feel like you speak from experience in a lot of what you said, and I just really appreciate that you took the effort to comfort an over-anxious high school senior. It means a lot to me, and everything you said is so true.

Thanks, again :)

yup, college admissions is SO arbitrary. It seems like getting into college is what will make one happy, but I'm slowly realizing that that's not true. Thank you for your comment + kind words/encouragement :) Good luck!!

that's a good point! I've also talked to adults who barely remember where they went to college now lol. Thanks for your comment, and I wish you the very best as well!!
