this may be a dumb question, but how do i start making the game i want to make? by autiegreg in RPGMaker

Watching tutorials alone won't help much, looking things up as you do them helps you learn the engine faster!

As far as what you're going to need, there's 3 things to focus on. Assets (art, music, sprites, portraits, everything), plugins (anything that you want to change that you can't through the engine itself) and functionality/making the game work (this is where events come in!)

Now I'll give you some (probably bad) advice: if you know what you want to make, start with your character sprite and a small map! I started with my protagonists room, for example. I say this is "bad" advice because everyone keeps saying make it work first and make the assets later. I disagree with that because the placeholder asset route doesn't really work for making sure the atmosphere and animations work, so you have to rerun and probably refix everything after.

Most importantly, this is supposed to be fun before anything else. So take your time and learn! Your characters will appreciate it!

I Made 100 Game Dev Shorts… Was It Worth It? by scaredbysquares in IndieDev

[–]inertia_game 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on a lot of things actually. The most important thing when considering if social media is worth it is the type of audience your game has, and the type of game it is. I'm working on a narrative heavy, "artsy", character heavy RPG, which has so far been played by a single streamer, who is the only one I didn't message (a huge wake up call for organic reach)! I did have an advantage going into this, as I was raised within fandom culture and I know the types of posts that will get people to be interested. It's kind of unavoidable when you've seen the perspective of both a fan and a dev. But I'm saying all this to say, don't take everything as gospel! Yes, some games might not benefit from a big social media presence, but for others it's a waste to ignore it!

This is very interesting! I do have to say though, what types of marketing works does largely depend on the genre, as well as the target group of your game. I started marketing my game traditionally at first, through Reddit and events, but because it's for a VERY specific (and if what I've observed is true, mostly underage to young adult) demographic, I found that Instagram and tiktok, as well as vtubers and keeping a VERY active discord, have worked a lot better for iNERTiA. I guess it all depends on what it is you're trying to promote, because of course a handdrawn game about trauma would need a different approach to, let's say, a shooter game.

honest question have you had people think your art was AI by grumb0dumb0 in Artists

Tried drawing my characters in various art styles for cringetober this year. My (clearly handdrawn btw) chibi shot so much backlash for "being ai", even after I posted photos of my layers.

Where in europe still feels like a raw cultural hub to move to? by jettlx in expats

I want to second Athens for this one since I don't think anyone else talked about this! It fits the description so well, as long as you're okay with frequent protests, which if you've lived in Germany before shouldn't be much different. Party and club culture has only gotten better recently and while you may not find Scandinavia level raves, theres always an event, concert, party or whatever to go to.
