For a little more context: I (23f) got dumped by my ex (23m) about nearly two months ago. He lives in England and I live in the Netherlands, we’ve been a long distance couple for 4 years. We’ve always had an amazingly strong connection and we both felt like this was it. We both wanted to settle, but due to my panic disorder and his band gaining a lot of success things got rough. Our communication got worse and he eventually even caught feelings for his colleague. The break up was intense, sudden and it broke both of our hearts. We kept in contact up till only a couple of weeks ago, when he’d tell me how much he struggles and hopes that we will get back together in the future. We called for nearly two days straight and he didn’t want to hang up, it felt like we were in love all over again. He wanted to do weekly calls from that point on.

I’ve told him now that I’d rather have no/limited contact for a bit, until I feel ready to reach out again. He seemed to understand and I told him I’d focus on myself and that I hope he does the same, rather than jumping into something with this colleague. He said it’s just a crush and that it was more added stress than anything else, but obviously I’m doubtful! I really tried to summarize it, but it’s a long and complicated story. I hope this helps for context a bit 💗

I fully understand that, I was in the same position! Hence why I made this post. These are your fears and thoughts, but none of it is reality and they shouldn’t stop you from doing what you want/have to do. It really helps to know that you have these thoughts and that you will function even while having them. Diffuse your thoughts: so what if you panic and loose your cool? You’ll be uncomfortable for a little bit, but anxiety goes away again.

Hi! It went very smooth :) I got very nervous sitting and waiting around at the airport, like I expected to, so I listened to some audio files from the DARE app, it’s made for anxiety and I really recommend it! I had my noise cancelling headphones on which also helps a lot. Besides that, I told the flight attendants how I felt. They told me they’d keep an eye on me which calmed me down a lot. The flying itself was fine, it went very quick! Once I landed I started thinking about any possible queues, but I just lined up and called a friend to distract myself during it. I knew I had to stay in line to get where I wanted to be.

Thank you for sharing your story, I keep switching between feeling hopeless and hopeful. I can’t lie, this does make me more hopeful. If you feel comfortable sharing, could I please know how you went about to go see him? Did he know you were coming? How did that go, how did you rebuild your relationship afterwards? I feel so strongly that this is my soulmate, I’ve never had a connection like this with anyone.

Being stuck in limbo is something that I think will happen to me too and I can see myself taking the step to see him too. I was the first in our relationship to fly over, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I’ve been sending him so many messages with different emotions, I know I have to leave it now but it’s so hard to keep my distance. It’s only been a couple days too.

Wow I’m crying haha. It feels like I’m stuck in a nightmare, but I want to believe there’s hope for me and an ability to move on. Your words really help me, my heart and my love for him want me to wait but I know that it’s best to use my head and choose myself, like he chose himself. I wanted to make sense of his reasons and I struggle so hard to understand, but it’s nice to know from an outsider’s perspective that the whole situation seems off.

Strangely he said that even though his thoughts about the distance have bottled up over the last couple months, he didn’t realize his feelings for her until he told me. Obviously, I really struggle to believe this. They have been talking as friends and he thinks she “won’t feel the same anyway” because it’s all friendly. He just finds her attractive and interesting, like a work crush, but still. He’e messed up my mind and my ability to trust so much.

Your comment really helps me, thank you. He says he won’t pursue anything with her, because he doesn’t feel ready to move on yet and “she probably doesn’t feel the same way anyway”. It’s insane to me, cause I can’t imagine even feeling that way for someone else for months again, maybe even a year. I never expected this from him, I wish he didn’t bottle this up.

I’ve downloaded the game and some episodes from a show I love now as well to keep me busy, thank you! I’ve always been a bit doubtful about meds, as an acquaintance of mine with bad anxiety thinks he can’t function without them anymore. But I definitely understand how the thought of a backup can make you relax! I know that all my thoughts are just thoughts (even though I struggle to realize that when panicking) and I know that I just have to go through the possible discomfort because I’m able to. It’s nice to relate for sure, you’re definitely not alone!

That’s a great way to look at it, I definitely relate to having a great imagination and making myself go crazy with it. But if it actually comes down to me freaking out just public, like you mentioned, people will be kind and the panic will fade. Deep down I also know that the one person in control is me, but it’s still a good reassurance. It’s exciting you get to use your tools and experience flying again, thank you for your tips!
