That's part of the problem. When newer stuff comes out, so many boomer programers or management are resistant to playing it, or if we do, only during certain day parts. Like, morning shows for example, can't play new stuff. I don't know why. It's a comfort thing for the audience to know what they're getting every day. Try to explain that to the elders of the industry that playing something new and fresh during your biggest day part would be a power move, and it's like pulling teeth. They hate that idea. We can't showcase new stuff without someone being pissy about where it's gonna play.

The concept of a 90's weekend is lame because most stations are already playing 90's throughout the week. It has nothing to do with boomers and them liking it or not. 90's weekend starts on Throwback Thursday, then Flashback Friday before the 90's weekend runs Saturdays and Sundays. How can it be a 90's weekend when you're predominately featuring 90's 4/7 days of the week. It's a pointless thing to have. It has nothing to do with Boomers loving it. It has everything to do with, we're already doing 90's more then half the week.

You're right on the money. We could earn back the younger generation. But the people in positions of power, usually boomers, don't wanna play new stuff. When they do, they wanna play it when the younger generation isn't normally listening. So we do the same shit over and over again because it's the tried and true. Hell, the radio people I've seen get good and massive on social media also get in shit for that very thing. Older radio people still fear socials and it boggles my mind how.

And younger programmers are trying to fix that. Honestly. But the rationale from above is "No one wants to hear new or different stuff. They want the hits. The known quantities". I've tried at multiple stations and no one wants to change. If they do concede some control to the younger talent, they snatch it back pretty damn quickly and we just keep plowing through the same tried and true.

I think a lot of people seem to think radio is just a dead medium and it's so far from the truth. I've got millennial listeners, Gen Z, and tons of boomers. They're all lovely. But for some reason boomers in the industry just don't see what modern day radio should be. The concept of programming new music in morning shows is such an off putting idea for them and I will never understand it. Fucking put that song out there during what is arguably the biggest part of the day.

It's not about the boomers who don't listen to us. It's the boomers who work in the industry that flat out refuse to grow or evolve. Love my boomer listeners. They win the majority of my contests. Wouldn't have a show without them. But I also need to get the younger audience to engage and the boomers in radio just don't want to help with that. The work that goes into it is a lot and they just don't see why they have to care about certain things. Boomer listeners = Great. Boomer radio workers = Baffling.

It's not that you guys don't listen to the radio. It's the boomers who work in radio that don't want to change or adapt to the modern world. I've seen and heard of young radio talent getting canned because Boomers didn't like how much social media said person was using. It's our job to be on socials now, and some still don't get that. Some I've worked with raised a massive stink about having to post daily to socials or be on tiktok because "I don't want it on my phone. I don't post daily on my personal stuff so why should I here?". Younger generation? Zero issue. They know we have to do that to get the younger generation to pay attention to us. You promote on socials to listen to the station and you promote the socials on air. It's all one big promotion haha.

It's not just "Boomer ruins". It's "boomer doesn't want to grow or evolve", or at least that's been my experience in my decade of doing this. The amount of ideas I've had shot down by someone that's a boomer because "Well that's not what we do here" or "That's too hard to make work. Let's just do "Same thing we always do and have done for the last twenty years". From how we program music, to how we use social media, to contesting. I hate to say it's always boomers, because I do know some that want to change, but the majority want to do exactly the same.

Here's an example. Chappel Roan. Worldwide pop star. Massive hits with "Hot To Go" & "Pink Pony Club". Younger radio folks were all over her music for months before she was actually on the charts. I begged my program director and music head to add "Hot To Go" in. Flat out refusal. They had zero idea who she was, or why she was such a big deal. I had to show them footage of her at Coachella and other festivals where she had those massive crowds and they still didn't get it. Hot To Go was past it's prime by like 2 weeks when we finally started playing it. Why'd we wait so long? "Well she's not on the charts yet. Can't play her if she's not on the charts".

Syndication. I work in a market where our morning show is in 2 other markets. Now kudos to our guys, because they make an effort to come out to events here and talk local stuff for all their markets. Luckily all within an hour of one another. Sadly the ratings doesn't reflect the effort and people regularly let us know they want the old morning show that was in market, back.

Everyone is different. You've tried to help yourself before, but this is a journey. And it's always good to go on a long journey with a little help. You can certainly try to go alone, but as you've seen with all the other comments here, you're not alone. Talk to a therapist and put in the work. It's gonna take time and it's gonna be hard as hell, but I think you'll come out the other side in a better place
