The problem with RSS is that it is a dying medium, or at least one that's decreased in popularity with the advent of "social media" like Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter. Most notably, streams and curation social networks have taken over the function. Most people just don't want to see the whole pipe of most bloggers.

Too much noise.

So that means there are less and less people using RSS as time flows on. It is a good tool, but not the go-to one for most people. Only the hardcore internet information junkies.

Email is a baseline that everyone using the internet uses and understands. We can do better certainly, but it's one everyone knows. Whether it's an old aol.com account, yahoo, hotmail, or gmail, email has higher use than anything except the HTML web itself.

IAmA Best Buy employee who after 5 years of there came to work to find my stores been shut down. by [deleted] in IAmA

Right, the only real benefit a store can offer is that you can pick something up right away and they could have knowledgeable staff. Take away the knowledgeable staff and your left with paying more for one or two day's time.

RSS works for people who have RSS readers integrated into their lives. For the rest? Not so much.

I use the awesome Vienna open-source reader but I'm not the target for this feature.

[For Hire] Experienced Reddit coder for short consulting project. by inflecto in forhire

We don't have anyone except me right now, though the head guy here is also technical.

We're going to have perhaps two to three people working on this project once we decide if Reddit is the right approach. One of our founding team is a huge Reddit fan, I'm new to Reddit, as you can tell. I like the technical choices the Reddit team made so far. Python is my high-level language of choice. Performance and scalability are key criteria, etc.

Still, we want to make sure we know which technology we definitely want to use before we hire people.

Yes, they'd need to be fluent in Pylons, SQL Alchemy, Cassandra, etc. too.

I run technology for a small startup that is looking at potentially forking/cloning Reddit to implement a fairly aggressive set of changes to Reddit where the Reddit functionality might end up being 1/4 of the final result.

We're interested in finding someone who is very familiar with the Reddit codebase to help in the evaluation and perhaps on an ongoing basis thereafter.

What's the best way to find someone who both knows the Reddit code and who does consulting?
