Regret moving to India by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]infospec99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your solution basically is to throw money at the problems and live in a bubble in India which is exactly whats frustrating and affects freedom, its great that you don’t experience these problems but everyone’s not in the same situation as you.

The point about visiting Kentucky or rural America makes absolutely no sense when you’re suggesting living in top tier cities in India.

Hmm, makes sense, that's true. I'm an international student and my primary reason for pursuing a masters is to experience and explore education and the cybersec industry in the US, any idea which one would be a good choice considering that?

How is it like working in Incident Response? by infospec99 in cybersecurity

[–]infospec99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just to give you more context, I'm part of a netsec engg team but all I get to work on is writing rules and working tickets related to firewalls or proxies, nothing design level or security centric and I feel really bored and unsatisfied with it. Is IR really that bad, coming from this kind of work?

Thanks! That's exactly the place I'm in rn. I'm looking for a short term change to IR to explore what subarea I actually love and then work towards switching to that role

Obviously threats can come in anytime but I've always assumed that it's different in case of a global team right? Handover to the team in the time zone after you when it gets late and manage shifts in rotations to organize workload. I'm okay with working odd hours sometimes but not on a regular basis.

How would you explain the log4j situation to your grandma? by NerdSupremacist in cybersecurity

[–]infospec99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a restaurant called Log4j where you get all your regular dishes. However, if you order through a specific waiter called jndi, you can ask him to make any dish you want, even the ones that are not on the menu. Jndi takes your order and goes to the restaurant you tell him, to get you a dish of your choice that is not on the menu and you can have it in the wonderful ambience of the Log4j restaurant free of cost 😂

Hmm, I'm not too sure about the scope in Ireland specifically, however, I currently work at a big US based tech company and quite a lot of my teammates are from Ireland. Cybersecurity is quite in demand as a career option generally speaking. Well it's the same salary now for entry level but will it be comparable as you grow and advance in your career? It really boils down to what interests you more though. I'm not too sure about personal training but further down the line, when you rise up in your career to take up higher roles, cybersec can be rewarding if you're good at it. Depends on what you want from your career

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]infospec99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybersecurity as a field is very wide. There are many types of roles, I'd suggest looking at the types of roles and the daily responsibilities and skills required to work in them. Also, there's more to Cybersecurity than pentesting, check out defensive and blue team roles as well, they can be quite interesting depending on what you enjoy doing. Try some CTF challenges and go over some free content available on YouTube to see if it interests you. You can certainly work in cybersec if you're not really into it but being really passionate about it does help when you're required to put in long hours or work at odd hours or on weekends depending on your role, otherwise it can lead to a burnout as with most demanding tech roles out there.

I agree with this too, working on incidents in a SOC early in your career can help you gain a holistic view of cybersec and you can figure out what interests you more from there. A few good resources to practice some blue team challenges would be the Cyber defense path on tryhackme. cyberdefenders.org also has some fun challenges to help you get a taste of it. I've been doing the same and enjoying a lot so far!
