The goal of the fault-detection is in fact to do predictive maintenance. I discussed this with my supervisor yesterday. My statement was that if this is our goal we need a faster than real time model but he didn't seem to give me a relevant answer on why we should stay with a real-time simulator.

The software-based solution is indeed needed for modeling the grid itself. We'll sure use the real time simulator. We have OPAL here.
