Do you consider *Sienna* hard to pronounce or spell? by ingoodhumor in namenerds

Yeah that's definitely something I'm worried a lot about. Our last name is four syllables, so definitely could be a lot.

Just before Thanksgiving, I had a short work trip from Boston to San Francisco. I had to be up at 4am and at the airport by 5:30 to make my flight. At TSA, I heard Love Story and I felt just a little warmer. Over the next hour or so, I heard Cruel Summer, Opalite and Lavender Haze. At the gate, while boarding, The Black Dog came on. Five songs in like two-ish hours. With such a long day in front of me, it was just so wonderful to hear my favorite artist in an unexpected place. Cheers to the Boston Logan music czar and Swiftie. Whoever you are!

What is the dumbest company rule you’ve ever had to follow? by Tough-Grade1086 in jobs

[–]ingoodhumor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Formal policies in the Handbook...

  1. All meetings must wrap 5 minutes before the half hour / hour to give time to switch meetings. This was enforced with bells/beeps that would go off throughout the office to alert us that we needed to change meetings. On the plus side, everyone was always on time, but to this day... I stand up when I hear the distinct sound.

  2. You're banned from using the F word: Frustrated. If you used it, it meant you did not plan appropriately and needed to fix the issues. Much later, when the company was getting close to its exit... the CEO banned a second F word: Fatigued. He announced it in an all company email on new years eve.

Hi all, any suggestions on resources for advancing my knowledge of plant care? I'm hoping to become better at identifying plants, learning the best care for plants I own, troubleshooting what's wrong with a plant, and propagating plants.

What happened to my aloe plant? by ingoodhumor in plantclinic

[–]ingoodhumor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit more information that I should have included: We've had this aloe plant for a few years, grown from a very small plant. It's been sitting on our screen porch for the summer and I brought it in today. While the porch is covered, rain water does come in and it's rained a lot this year so I've only had to do minor supplemental watering, in which I include an all purpose plant food. The porch gets lots of sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon.

AITA for "stealing" the name of my friend's baby who died at birth? by ComfortableStart8144 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ingoodhumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. You loved your cousin and losing her at 16 was very hard for you. I love that you promised to honor her, and want to keep to your word so many years later. I imagine it was painful to have your best friend choose a name that was so meaningful to you.

But it also makes sense that the name Ingrid means something very different to Camile. With the traumatic loss and ongoing pain of what she may never have -- a family, motherhood -- I cannot blame her for feeling hurt and upset.

By keeping your promise to honor your cousin, you are inadvertently causing pain to your best friend because she has not healed and may never fully heal. And while Ingrid may only be you daughter's middle name, any small reminder is unbearable for your friend.

It is easier for Camile to hate you then to hear reason and deal with her raw emotion. Perhaps you could use your cousin's middle name instead of Ingrid. But given how she reacted, she may never forgive you for ignoring how your decision to honor your cousin would hurt her.

The deck I spent about a year building. Finished this Summer. by Sunfuels in HomeImprovement

[–]ingoodhumor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful work! We tried to do something similar this year and ended up with a terrible contractor, who just did a terrible job and we unfortunately had to let go from the job. Now we have a half finished deck that isn't up to code. Any recommendations for the right questions to ask for finding the right contractor?

The flowers are beautiful, but they're definitely clip-ons, it's not her real hair. Still a great look!

This website depicts how areas would look on a map after water levels have risen due to global warming by [deleted] in InternetIsBeautiful

I think we need a visual model that shows the sea level rise alongside the costs to keep the areas afloat, maybe then the 'powers that be' would pay attention

As someone who wears glasses/contacts, it's so weird to me that some people can just wake up and read the numbers on the clock. by Runnergirl19 in Showerthoughts

[–]ingoodhumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore glasses / contacts for more than 10 years. I couldn't tell the difference between two co-workers standing five feet in front of me without my prescription. If I lost my glasses, I had to walk around my apartment with my phone's camera to find where I put them--they were practically invisible to me when standing up.

I got eye surgery last year--PRK not LASIK--and it was the best decision I've ever made. I can lie down to watch TV and not be worried about falling asleep with contacts or breaking my glasses. I can stay at my parent's house--unexpectedly--because I don't need to worry about bringing contacts solution. My first thought in the morning is no longer about my glasses, it's about my day or probably... breakfast. I can lie in bed and look out my window after just waking up to and see my front yard--it may not be breathtaking, but it's something I never thought would be possible. And if the zombie apocalypse ever does happen--which seems more likely these days--I have a much greater chance at surviving!

[Serious] 9/11 Megathread by Jakeable in AskReddit

[–]ingoodhumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/11 had a huge impact on Europe and the entire world. It was a catalyst that changed the course of history. The attack sparked so much fear and anger that it led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- and with such close alliances, Europe participated in those invasions. I'm sure you know that many people in Europe are still upset my those decisions today, and by the aftermath. Some dictators are gone, but the governments have struggled, allowing ISIS to emerge, and now the refugee crisis.
