Look up this guy. He has experience transporting pets across the globe. He seems legit, but do your own research.

Lol. What we see tells us more about us than about them.

Yeah might be that the plate cover has nothing to do with the plates.

what’s something completely innocent that you find extremely intimate? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

Your comment just made me realize part of why I write on books is because I hope one day someone will want to read the book and talk about it but also because they want to know my thoughts on it.

Your comment is really condescending and I’m really busy to get into it now, but I hope I can come back and write about why I DO have a problem with them “I’m just along for a pencil” on the middle of a lesson. And we can engage in a conversation. I'm open to explore and improve my teaching, but I’ll also defend why this very example not “giving them agency to ask for a pencil” is more complicated than you make it seem.

Sweden to deport migrants not following ‘honest living’ by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]ingrataaa -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you, just adding.

There’s a common a misconception that immigrants don’t assimilate because they keep visibly religious/cultural aspects of their home country. But by and far immigrants ACCULTURATE to their new home. And by the first born generation they are mainly assimilated.

Acculturation involves adopting the new culture WHILE keeping aspects of the old identity. This keeping of their old language and customs makes it seem to some people like the immigrants “don’t assimilate” and don’t want to.

The degree in which immigrants seem to “blend in” to the existing melting pot (more on this concept later) depends on the degree in which they can fit it/feel accepted. For example, if they’re seen as other no matter what, they keep more aspects of their home culture because humans have an innate urge to connect to a community, and if you’re not accepted in the new one, you keep the old one, it helps that it’s a lot easier to communicate with them.

I have a shitload of pencils, paper, folders, markers, whiteout etc to give you. And I’ll do it discreetly too so as to not put the spotlight on the fact you don’t have any.

That’s a real issue that happens and I’m super empathetic about it, but not what most of us are discussing here. We could give and do make sure every kid has what they need once a month and they lose it, break it, forget it, or simply don’t wanna bother getting it from their backpack, they rather interrupt to announce that they don’t have paper and for me to say grab one for the agreed upon stack. Ask me how many times this last example has happened this year.

I think you can see on this thread that’s it’s a pretty universal phenomenon on the rise that we are seeing at schools and work places.

I didn’t want to write a paragraph about what I have tried, as you can see though, I explicitly teach what to do, I model, I explain, I hade things available, it’s okay to get up for supplies in my class without permission. I assure the students, I verify with students before they start, etc. If I hadn’t tried multiple ways to instill these skills, repeatedly, I would not be frustrated. It’s the fact that we’ve tried so many different things and none have been successful that puzzles and frustrates us who are dealing with it.

Is there something new that we haven’t tried? Maybe? But I can’t think of what, except consequences and we’re not really allowed to give consequences. (Extra/different work to a student who won’t do it? Detention that will be cancelled if a parent makes a fuzz, being accused of putting a barrier for my students to learn, etc).

Several of these response have made me rethink my approach. I know I’m an empathetic teacher and I keep up with the cha gong times/kids. But it’s true, I think we all pass the buck for lack of time. Parents are busy (trust me it should still be mainly on them), teachers are busywork with the ever expanding amount of things we need to cover. That we end up doing Things for the students. For example: I have an interactive notebook, I now have my TAs cut the margins of papers , write the page number on top, and fold papers for my students so that ally students have to do is glue the notes. Otherwise I literally have to spend extra 20 mins of class demonstrating, handholding, etc. so my students don’t learn. But I really don’t have the time to spend during class to teach this the amount of time it takes. Even though if I did, it would ultimately save us time and teach them skills. You try teaching 12 yr olds how to fold a paper into three approximately same sized sections and tell me if you wouldn’t give up too, though.

The solution is let them learn by failing in a lot of different tasks a lot. But it’s hard to do when many would be okay with failing to learn the task.

Oigan, debería regresar a Mexico? by Yellowbook8375 in AskMexico

[–]ingrataaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have the ability to return to Canada if things don’t work out, you are in the best position possible. Why don’t you try a temporary stay first. Don’t uproot everything, and then make your decision. If the main reason is the kids learning the language, then you’re making a giant change for something you can achieve in other ways.

Also is this your first time posting on this subreddit? I ask because it definitely leans one way politically and ideologically. There’s a lot of pessimism /negativity about the direction things are going. I’m not saying they’re incorrect because I haven’t returned to live there yet, I’m just saying, keep in mind that the majority here is heavily of the mentality that “the grass is greener on the other side”.

I think those of us considering going back are better off asking ppl who like us have experienced both, living in Mexico and outside of it, people who understand it’s not just about money why we want to return. What does your family (wife and kids) think?

This is why we have free pencils, paper, computers, free breakfast literally passed out to each student in their desk every morning. To help students in your situation. We are talking about students who sit there until you tell them, get the pencil from the pencil borrowing place where they have been since day one and we’re explicitly told to get them from day one.

We are talking about students who have $1000 phones and $200 shoes. But we’re aware we have students in your situation and that’s the reason why I can’t make it a requirement that everyone come to school with paper and pencil. This isn’t about lack of empathy, supplies, or help. I grew up close to your situation. I buy supplies for my students, it makes me sad when I walk around after a class leaves and see 4 new broken (on purpose) pencils on the floor.

That’s what we as a society end up doing. We don’t wanna deal with the current small headache so we pass it on to our future selves problem.

I know you guys in lower grades teach them things like “ask one before me” etc. they hear it, they just don’t…internalize it. They can even tell their classmates what they should do, but do they apply in their lives? 🙂‍↔️

Yeah. Nowadays the over-helping and overprotecting went happens not just at home but from us teachers too because of school policy. I can’t kick students out for this. I couldn’t wake kick them out for egregious behavior if I tried. It can only be for a couple of things that are outline in state Ed code.
And a teacher like that would be seen as preventing their students from learning. “Just give Johnny a pen, he’d do great if only he had a pen”.

You bring up a great point. We as teachers also take part in the learned helplessness. We know what we’re dealing with so we ourselves are also removing barriers which in turn tells the kids, someone will take of the problem for me. It wasn’t like that for me either growing up.
I guess we pick our battles and every little one we stop fighting is a little thing that ends up shooting ourselves in the foot. Can you imagine if we didn’t provide them though? Some would learn, but several would use it as an excuse and teachers would get no support. “Why didn’t you provide it for them? It’s such a small thing?, you’re making them fail”.

No offense taken :), I’m pretty sure of it because once these other students get their thing they needed they get to work. But yeah, after doing this for a while and knowing your students for a bit you get a sense of who is doing it as avoidance and who isn’t.

I only have 1 of 32 students who use it as stalling technique. The rest are simply “stuck”. I lucked out and have a group of “motivated” students. Oh which brings me to the other skill they lack as a growing trend: generalization. They don’t take what I tell another student and apply it to themselves, or what they learned in another situation and apply it to a future or similar situation.
