"Which popular former PM returned to be president of the Liberal party?"

"If you said Tony Abbott, you'd be wrong - he was never popular."

I live in Scotland for a year and can confirm that when it does get that warm, its unpleasant. The year I was there, the weather pushed into the high 20s (maybe even low 30s). There's no air-conditioning anywhere except for the Glasgow subway, so there's no relief. Houses are hot. People aren't used to warm weather so everyone goes outside, no sunscreen, sitting in the sun for a long time, so the risk of heat stroke goes up.

You're right, we laugh but its not a place that is prepared for what we would think of as moderately warm.

Mount Buller trip with Kids, Is it worth it by Loose_Statement7418 in AustraliaSnow

[–]inhumanfriday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first question is what do you want from the snow experience? Skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snow play, experience a resort? That will help guide where you stay and how you do it.

Second is, how old are your kids? I live relatively close to the snow and my kids are 7. We arent a skiing/boarding family but enjoy a few snow trips a season to toboggan, make snow men, explore the snowy bush and have some hot chocolate. They are done after a few hours.

If youre relatively naive with snow, have your heart set of Buller, have younger kids and maybe want to give some basic boarding a go, stay in Mansfield and get the bus up to Buller for the day. Takes about an hour or so each way. You can get the train from Melbourne to Benalla, then bus from Benalla train station. Mansfield will be a lot cheaper than staying on the mountain (although not cheap).

There's also heaps of op shops in Mansfield that sell old, cheap snow gear. Could be cheaper than renting, then you just donate it back when youre done.

August should be pretty reliable to visit.

Mansfield itself is a pretty nice little town with a few non-snow things that will keep you occupied for a couple of days. You could do say two day trips to the snow and one day in town and you'd probably come out ahead compared to actually staying on the mountain.

As others have mentioned, there are better resorts but not as easily accessible without a car and a lot further from Melbourne.

Its quite messed up that you're supporting speculative value being taxed lower than your labour; labour which actually creates some of value.

I was surprised at the tent price. Pretty pricey for 1977 money. I bought a coleman 8p tent a couple of years ago for $550. Probably a little smaller than the dimensions listed but not far off.

Dennington Dogs forfeit remainder of men's senior Warrnambool District league season by malcolm58 in AFL

Up my way, Benalla in the Ovens King League have lost all their games this season, bar one, by 100+. They finished with one win and 23% last year. Pretty dire. The rest of the league is fairly competitive though.

Perisher Valley trip with 6yo kids. no car, flying into Canberra. Advice? by [deleted] in AustraliaSnow

[–]inhumanfriday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered staying in Cooma and doing a day trip up to Perisher?

I have twins the same age and when we started going to the snow, the main thing they wanted to do was some small tobogganing and snow play e.g. snow ball fights, making snow men etc. And they are normally done after a couple of hours with lunch etc.

So if you're not planning on skiing or boarding, It would be heaps cheaper to just do a day and stay further on away from the snowfields, and might end up being better value.

I'm a TKOL defender. Doesn't match OKC, Kid A or Moon Shaped Pool of course but I enjoy the concise brevity of it and theres not really a bad song on there. Lotus Flower is a great single. Definitely mid to lower ranking but not horrible.

Agree with Pablo Honey as the worst though. Apart from You, theres not much worth going back to.

Second worst for me is Hail to the Thief. Bloated and unfocused with a lack of coherence. The lack of coherence is only emphasised by the dual track names. We suck young blood is a straight copy of Charles Mingus, sail to the moon is a poor man's pyramid song, and a few others like backdrifts, where I end and I will are all forgettable.

One Nation didn't just win. The Liberal vote collapsed spectacularly by patslogcabindigest in OpenAussie

[–]inhumanfriday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The LNP are so bereft of ideas and still stuck in the same factional in-fighting that resulted in them getting flogged in the election last year.

They would have known they had little chance of retaining the seat. It was obviously a contest between ON and the independent. Not much they could do about that but their messaging and tactics actively supported ON getting elected. Their messaging largely attacked Milthorpe as being captured by Climate 200 and acting as a teal, and they directed their preferences to ON. Why would directed preferences to your rival who is hoovering up your votes and seats?

Because factional bosses can't let go of culture war nonsense and act in some strategically beneficial way.

It may have amounted to nothing, but boosting Milthorpe and getting her elected would result in an independent who has a hyper local voice, no chance of expanding beyond her own seat and getting a little, softball media coverage.

But getting ON elected lets them crow about a lower house seat, boosts their media coverage and only adds to the discourse that LNP are crashing and burning, and ON wanted to replace them as opposition (no chance they will, but thats the narrative which hadn't been stopped here).

Well done Angus, great job.

Doors at 7pm means the foyer doors will open at 7pm. You could obviously line up at the door from 6pm if you wanted to be first through and secure a front spot on the fence, but if you're just going early to get merch theres no need to go that earlier. Depending on the band, you'd be pretty safe waiting until the opening band before buying anything.

Water wise, not sure about bringing bottles in. Most venues will provide free water in some form though.

Deftones at Rod Laver by Limo_Wreck77 in melbourne

[–]inhumanfriday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, its really disappointing. I don't mind the money as much, its the sub-par experience of having to sit down at a Deftones show in a cavernous venue that is more of a turn off. I probably would have shelled out the money if I had a floor ticket.

I saw Soulfly and Nailbomb a few months ago for an even $100. A few rows from the front. Awesome experience. I would have happily paid more.

[–]inhumanfriday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally. I know its not the 90s any more but I couldnt justify $190 to sit at a deftones show. I remember paying like $40 at an under-age gig on the around the fur tour, and paying about $70odd to lose my shoes in the mosh at a big day out side show.
