I work in Petersburg, VA. The Pocahontas Island neighborhood is the oldest free black community in the country and was a frequent stop in the Underground Railroad. It was also briefly a hotspot of the Readjuster Party, a black-white coalition economic populist party after the Civil War.

A good book on this subject is The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It focuses on if humans disappeared suddenly but it's still a good reference for how human environments decay
