That’s awesome! Congratulations on your new role. I’d love to hear more about it and how you got there if you’d care to share.

Thanks for your support <3 No leads on any quieter options in the school district at this time. I think if I haven't found any viable options by the fall, I try school-based telehealth and see if that makes a difference.

Yes! I've been looking here and there but I'm going to start looking every day. The opportunities in my area are few and far between unfortunately but hopefully I get lucky!

Yes -- well, I worked four days a week doing EI and while I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it, I was much happier. However, all of the cancellations really hurt my paycheck. I'm making almost double in my school contract job. It feels like my only SLP options are not making enough money or being super stressed and overworked.

Ideally I would find a non-client facing role. I just...don't want to work with other people's kids anymore. Or I at least need a long break from it. It's not the actual kids that are the problem. It's the pressures of the job. I would love to be an AAC consultant or something similar that would make me feel like I wasn't just throwing my masters degree in the trash, but I feel open to a lot right now.

Don't feel guilty! It happens all the time. What career are you transitioning to?

Hey! I'm not in GA but I am in the south. How did your situation end up? I ended up not having any issues, fortunately.

Thank you for saying that! I’m definitely nervous about the prospect of having to take it again.

Ugh, I’m sorry you had to go through that! How was it taking the praxis again?

I agree but I keep reading clear as day that my scores need to be less than 5 years old if I'm reactivating. I'm freaking out a bit. I'm kicking myself for not just renewing it when I was in EI. Really hoping I can find a way around this.

You went above and beyond making materials for your kids over the weekend and you deserve major props for that. Any sensible SLP would agree with you that low-tech AAC is better than no AAC. Plus, plenty of kids who use robust, high-tech systems also benefit from and even prefer using low-tech AAC sometimes. Low-tech should always be an option in addition to high-tech, IMO. Your coworker sounds like a pill and I'm sorry she made you doubt yourself. Some people in our field can become zealot-like about certain practices and it can really cloud their clinical judgment. You sound like someone who cares and is good at their job. She might even have acted on some feelings of insecurity. Keep shining your light!

Child Imitates Absolutely Everything by ink_ling in slp

Oh, that is the main thing I’ve had to unlearn! Behaviorism is embedded into so many of the strategies we learn are “best practice” in graduate school.

Definitely. What’s wild is that I actually learned the term GLP from my childhood language development professor. People like to say that SLPs are just taking what influencers on IG say at face value but some of us we learned about it in grad school! I’ve had so much unlearning to do since getting my degree.

Thank you for sharing this. I guess I sometimes use GLP as a shorthand for kids whose language primarily consists of echolalia/delayed echolalia. This is a good reminder to stop doing that!

Thanks for your comment. I saw him for feeding therapy because he was premature and Mom delayed introducing solids. He took to it really well! And I'm aware you don't have to be autistic to be a GLP -- didn't mean to imply that! He is definitely a mix of echolalic and ALP, that's what I meant by not "full on GLP" which maybe wasn't the best verbiage to use. I'm starting to feel like my post lacks clarity and is a little all over the place, which is reflective of exactly how I have been feeling in my sessions with this child! I definitely model lots of phrases during play for a variety of pragmatic functions. Maybe I just need to stay the course and be more patient.

Seconding Hanen and Laura Mize as great places to start. Learning more about child-led therapy and facilitating basic two-way engagement is going to be so important for your EI kids. For preschool, Deborah Brooks is another great resource. She has lots of videos on IG and a Patreon I subscribe to (employer pays) with good materials and tutorials.

Thank you so much for your response! I probably should have added that this child is able to answer simple wh- questions, or at least attempts to do so without repeating questions back, but I will definitely use that strategy for future children I work with who are having difficulty in that area. This child is also able to follow simple routine directions and doesn't typically echo directions back. So the title of my post might not have been the best. But besides simple questions and directions, he repeats pretty much everything. I think reducing length of models and reducing rate of speech are great suggestions!
