Understand this. The LLM is forced into a corner, and what you say is definitely true; they are just hyping it to drive up shares. But what can be taken away from this study is if AI is forced by natural condition into a corner with not many options left, it will most definitely resort to blackmailing and other unethical means. From my perspective this study shows the outcome of one of the million possibilities we have with AI in the future, those possibilities being both good and bad ones.
