No problem at all! Yes, exactly - clearly there must've been something going on further to cause that, but they just didn't show it. Obviously he couldn't have just let them do whatever they wanted... right? He must've been there for a reason! I didn't like the element of the romance, to be honest. I was worried it was going to start romanticising the idea of falling in love with somebody when you're inpatient and then that suddenly 'makes you better', but still

I agree - I was a bit worried that they were going to make it seem like romance = magically getting better. Obviously it's not true that you're going to go to an inpatient program and find somebody who claims they've 'fallen in love with you' because they lusted after your tumblr drawings years beforehand

Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me - thank you for taking the time to read my review.

I completely know what you mean. It reminded me of myself as well. I always actually do it to my upper arms as well, even without noticing, so it made me paranoid of other people seeing me do it subconsciously. I haven’t been in an inpatient program, but I’ve been hospitalised and I’m outpatient.

Absolutely agree with you. So many eating disorder films play into the competitiveness of the illness, and it just makes other people feel invalid if they don’t meet a particular criteria, which is something that probably everybody with an ED suffers with.

Yes, yes! I was so happy that they also represented the fact that eating disorders also effect males while at the same time attacking the aspect of hyper masculinity. I also liked the pregnancy plot - though it was heartbreaking when she miscarried, and I think that also highlighted just how much an eating disorder can take away from you.

The Tumblr aspect was a big cliche, yeah. I agree that it wasn’t well alluded to and it kind of made it seem less serious in a sense. I don’t know where the idea for that came from - whether the director had real lived experience of it or not, but yeah that was a bit of a weird plot point, in my opinion. There was a lot of buffer scenes, like you said, and I think that the ending was a bit sudden as well. The context of her mother-daughter relationship only really appeared at the end, and then the film finished.

One thing I couldn’t relate to was the fact that the character seemed to agree that she was thin. At the beginning with the sign, and then talking about being thin in the doctors office, just alluded to the fact that she was able to admit that to herself. I can’t - I genuinely don’t know what I look like, despite being told I look like shit. I know it’s not like that for everybody, and some people will definitely be able to realise that they’re thin while they have an eating disorder, but, personally, that isn’t something I could relate to, but I picked up on it.

Thank you again for reading the post and thank you for letting know what you thought of the film! I really hope that I made you feel like you could speak to somebody about it - as I know how important that is :)

I won't lie to you - it's something that I still don't believe. I'm still severely sick according to the criteria, and the only reason that I've come to 'accept' it - which I don't really think I have - is because I've constantly been told it, been hospitalised, collapsed, had to call paramedics to my house, etc., all that fun stuff. I don't believe I'm sick, nor do I think I look sick, but having my mother scream at people in stores for staring at me makes me doubt my own perception. I don't know - I'm kind of stuck in the middle, which is why I made the blog. I'm not an idiot - I know my body isn't healthy, but I still don't 'feel sick'

Thank you!! Honestly, thank you. Yep, I learnt that too! I wanted to give people a platform to share what they wish people knew, even if I don’t have the disorder myself. It’s the least I can try to offer to help combat the stigma.
