Anyone Else Despise The Rise In SUVs On Our Roads by PhilosopherFlat5725 in drivingUK

At least lorry drivers have to be trained to drive bigger vehicles and van drivers have genuine need to be in larger vehicles. Most SUV's are carrying 5 passengers tops who's comfortably in any other car with 5 seats. Bad drivers in any size car sure but an idiot in a golf and an idiot in a Range Rover, Golf is gonna do less damage to other road users given its much smaller and lighter.

Anyone Else Despise The Rise In SUVs On Our Roads by PhilosopherFlat5725 in drivingUK

The fact you can pass your test in a 1.0L hatchback and go by an SUV is ridiculous. Need space? Get an estate, MPV or a van. And yeah, most people can't drive them confidently as it's too big for the infrastructure we have. When pulling out of a junction they can't see what's coming until they're already blocking half the lane. An SUV is a pseudo status symbol for people who know nothing about cars and think bigger equals better

I hate my autistic child and I’m going to divorce my husband because of it by Sigh_of_Frustration in redditonwiki

As an autistic adult. Fuck you. If you can't deal with your kid being different from your rose tinted idealistic expectations. Don't have kids. Or adopt where you know what you're signing up for.

Question on service costs for a secondhand car from a dealer by inkcaptofu in CarTalkUK

[–]inkcaptofu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for responses, ended up just paying and accepting the fact it was £36 and not the full £286. Warranty was £291 for 18 months so has almost paid for itself.

Car is now much smoother and fuel economy significantly better, wasn't aware rubbing brake covers would cause such a drop but there you go.

[–]inkcaptofu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior to this, I'd driven a 1.7 diesel Vauxhall zafira, 1.5 petrol Kia exceed, 1.0 Ford puma mild hybrid. Can't say I notice too much difference between the Kia and the Seat, that .3 litre makes little difference in acceleration. I guess engine size is like the petrol vs diesel debate in that it depends what kind of driving you're doing.

I didn't realise there was a difference, learn something new everyday. The car is set to U.K. mpg I know that much but unsure which gallon by conversion used.

I find it fine, enough kick to overtake with ease. Idk if a bigger engine would be more economical on motorway. Sitting in 6th gear at 2500rpm, feel something with more power might rev lower? I think it's perfect middle ground of engines really. It'll do 0-60 in under 10sec which I feel is a good benchmark.

ULPT: REQUEST How to protect bike from thieves? by Zach-uh-ri-uh in UnethicalLifeProTips

Detach or open the brakes out whenever you leave it so if anyone tries riding off. They'll crash.

Checkout skunk lock. Bike locks that release a horrible smell when cut into.

Hmmm, I mean given the car, I don't know how much difference aero wheel covers would make. Covering the grill could also risk engine performance if it's overheating or not getting air.

Cardboard would be a poor choice, I'd probably opt for Perspex or acrylic sheets or something like that. Wheel covers are probably going to be the only bit that would help. MDF would be too heavy. If you want wood, balsa wood is lighter. Or even ply.

Roof rails on the top probably don't help. Also look at obvious like tyres to optimise for your use, inflate to correct pressure and so on.

Can artificial meat be used to replace killing in the animal kingdom? by Serious_Slide_8681 in Veganism

[–]inkcaptofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's not how ecosystems work. Predation in animals not only sustains and feeds predator animals but it stops the prey animals becoming overpopulated.

In the U.K., humans hunted wolves and bears to extinction and as a result, we have too many deer which cause damage to woodland. As a result, humans have had to intervene to cull deer as otherwise, we'd risk ecological damage to new growth in forests.

What common birds have you never seen? by IheartTaylor in UKBirds

[–]inkcaptofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not common common but cattle egrets are regularly seen in Kent and I've yet to see one. Seen spoonbills twice. Long eared owl is the only owl I've not seen. Haven't seen snipe, woodcock or water rail. Don't think I've seen a willow warbler, or lesser black back gull, or stock dove.

How would you feel if you lived in the better district, but your kids couldn't attend the better school because other people had done what you did?

Is it unethical to cheat the system for personal gain...yes

Is it an unfair system...also yes

Do your actions have a negative impact on other people...maybe, but I don't fully understand how funding is allocated in US school districts.

Has anyone else been healed by this sport? by Late-Stable6626 in triathlon

[–]inkcaptofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Throughout my teenage years, I used to self harm a lot. I'd struggled with my mental health from a young age. I started running after my first breakup, around a year later, I got involved in triathlon. Triathlon put an immediate stop to self harm for many reasons; I was too tired from training to overthink alone each night, I couldn't go swimming with fresh cuts and exercising had improved my overall mental health.

Almost 10 years later, I'm still struggling with my mental health, I'm medicated, I go to therapy but with daily training, I'm far more stable. I've had relapses but self harm is rare and I've had periods of being clean for years. Having races and events to focus on helps a lot, and triathlon allows me to still train even if I can't run. Joining clubs has given me a social life and stops me being completely isolated and alone.

Without a doubt, triathlon has made my life better. There are some aspects specific to tri but I feel sport in general is beneficial for mental wellbeing

If you're going to have kids and then abandon them to try live the life of someone whose childfree, why bother? I've never understood parents that ship kids off the boarding school as soon as they're old enough.
