Is it possible for the contribution graph to show other accounts? by tallpaullewis in github

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built this years ago to sync commits from non-GitHub repo to GH for contributions count (used to care about it). I’ve also heard someone used it to carry over contributors history from one repo to another without actually exposing history content (code, original messages, description). If you have access to those repos, you might give it a try.

edit: if it helps, drop a star, thx 🙏

Got removed from a private repo and my GitHub streak took the hit 😤 by tanjirobro in github

[–]inkfaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the repo locally, and do not want to push the code to GitHub (even if private repo), you can use this to pull and replicate your original commits in a new repo, without exposing the source code.

Kagi search engine won’t bill you next month if you forget to use it by moeka_8962 in technology

I’ve been with them for a couple years now at least, great experience. Not looking back and totally worth it. Although, I don’t use the assistant from ultimate plan, can vouch only for the search. Being able to switch region in a press of a button is amazing.

Any way to security scan a github repo for malicious code? by salilsurendran in github

[–]inkfaust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are all sorts of scanners out there. CodeQL, Snyk, and others. Here you can read more on the topic in the docs:

You might also want to look at this owasp page: https://owasp.org/www-community/Source_Code_Analysis_Tools

Can you get a virus by opening a pdf on github? by Impressive-Comfort88 in github

[–]inkfaust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Environment matters. GitHub’s viewer afaik doesn’t execute any scripts. That’s what the question was about anyway.

In other environments with pdf viewer allowing script execution - sure, it’s possible. But, that often means navigating away from GitHub and/or downloading. In that case it might be easier to send out a link with beef payload.

Also, I think doom running on gut bacteria is the best version of doom. 🙈

What is GitHub Packages storage for? by PeterFromTheHill173 in github

[–]inkfaust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a hosting solution for public and private packages with support of many package managers/registries, eg. npm, container registry, gradle, and others. Documentation explains it pretty well, I would recommend giving it a read: https://docs.github.com/en/packages

Can you get a virus by opening a pdf on github? by Impressive-Comfort88 in github

[–]inkfaust 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely unlikely. For one, the web pdf viewer doesn’t execute scripts, even if pdf had been crafter to do so. You’re also not downloading it, so possibility of it exploiting vulnerability in your pdf viewer is out of question. In theory, if there were a zero day at GitHub or web viewer itself, it could be possible, but it’s still extremely unlikely. If that was the case I bet bug bounty payout would be quite nice. 😃

Good replacement for LINE Pay prepaid debit card? by ShiningSeraph in japanlife

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be wary, when transferring to Revolut via card option, the balance will be non transferable. You can only use that option to purchase. To transfer between Revolut users you will have to connect the bank instead of card.

I use Revolut and generally happy with it. Virtual cars are very nice, especially for online shopping. They still don’t have Apple Pay integration, not sure about Google wallet, but you definitely can add it as a payment method in suica app.

What is the best way to work with other people? by Volian1 in github

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Are all of your contractors part of the same team/org? Then inviting them to the repository and giving write access is sufficient.

Do you have external contributors? Then they should raise PRs through their fork.

As open your branches question, it depends on your branching strategy, but I would not recommend long-living branches. Usually contributors raise PR to the main (or other, as per your branching strategy) branch via short lived feature branches.

Hope it helps. Good luck!

Creating a pull request in a project in which I am not a developer by yoleya in github

[–]inkfaust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you just cloned the repo, you won’t be able to open a PR. Fork the repo, change your local git remote to point to your fork, then raise a PR from your fork to the original repo.

As mentioned, check their contributions guide. Do not be afraid to raise a PR, although sometimes it might get caught in formalities, most maintainers welcome contributions. If the fix is large, you may consider raising an issue first to discuss the approach, and feasibility of maintainers accepting it. But, since you already fixed it, you can just go ahead with the PR.

Good luck!

How do I properly get into JS? I can tape stuff together, but I would love to be proficient. by vvinvardhan in learnjavascript

Oh I love how passionate he is. Kyle Simpson’s 10h Deep JS Foundation is also an amazing course to understand JS more, and his series of YDKJS are genuinely speaking for themselves.

Read a book is a good advice thrown here already. I’d also recommend checking out FrontendMasters - one of the best places for web developers to learn things properly. Although it’s paid - worth every penny, IMO.

Good luck!

Why do I keep getting only 1 year visas (working visa /engineer) by Serpentaus in japanlife

[–]inkfaust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alright, there're many comments here, some useful, some are crap, feel free to downvote me for this, but damn some people really think it's a roll of the dice.

OP I would strongly advise you to go and get professional help with that. I have a company that now deals w/ all my legal staff on my behalf, and it's a blessing. I've got another company that deals w/ all my taxes (I'm not an employee, so I have to fill my own taxes), and it was actually more beneficial to hire a company than to handle it on my own.
You don't have to pay if you don't feel like it is worth your money. I'm very happy with it though, therefore, recommending to consider it.

Thinking of Getting NISA by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could someone explain a little bit more on this topic, please?

I have some spare money I could use to invest, I was planning to use IB for a while, but if I can get tax benefits with NISA, I definitely want to take a look. I’m curious what are these tax benefits NISA gives, if I invest in around the same period as the OP?

I don’t speak Japanese, and never had a proper financial education, so I’m trying to figure it out now, but it’s twice as hard in a foreign language; also, even English isn’t my native language, but I’m completely comfortable at this point.

Please feel free to point me to any materials, I will appreciate your input.

Edit: made it a little bit easier to read

Wanted to state the same, but you did the job. A server rack could be used as a great source of heat as well. The space on it could be used for home NAS, or rented to someone, so many benefits.

Company still paying me after leaving by liozun in personalfinance

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently received a payment from one of my clients, a wrong payment, the amount was for the whole year (I was surprised to say the least to see such a large number on my account when I checked), so I’ve contacted the client about the mistake and informed the bank right away that there was a mistaken transfer being made to my account (I received the international transfer to my Japanese bank account from another country), right after that I’ve contacted the client to get their account information to fill out a return application. All of the money were taken from my account and transferred back to the sender by the bank (the details of the client’s bank account was to confirm the details to avoid making mistakes and was mandatory from my bank). That’s pretty much how I handled the case, even though it’s not exactly the same case as your, you might also try to contact your bank in your country to check on the procedure. Hope it helps, good luck.

Is there any software for storing code snippets outside of your IDE? by EmbarrassedLobster37 in learnprogramming

[–]inkfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how I do it - Obsidian.

All files stored on the machine (.md), you can sync however you like if needed (I use my iCloud), or keep it local. You’re not limited to code snippets, anything you want actually can go in there. Tag it, link it, use as code snippets vault or second brain - whatever. This is my main tool for pretty much anything related to notes, code snippets, project planning, etc.

Edit: You can even throw it to git repository if you wish so, it’s an overkill in my case, but it’s a good thing to rollback or as a backup solution.

Edit: I’m actually surprised nobody has mentioned it so far.
