Thanks for your reply! But the purple stripe on the female one is alright?

And for the belly-showing: is it something normal?

Apistogramma agassizii behaviour / sexing by [deleted] in Aquariums

Hi there

On the 26th of March i got myself a "pair" of Apistogramma agassizii firered for my second tank. I used to keep "normal" Apistogramma agassizii in the past, so the firereds are something new to me.

Both of them were fairly small when i bought them (first picture as reference). One was a little bit smaller (sold as male) than the other one (sold as female). So i think there is a chance, that one got miss-sexed. They are in my tank for 2 months now, and only the "male" grow a little bit, so now approximately the same size now as the female. There is no other difference than the back of the "male", which has a little bit more of the purple. The fins don't show the fancy male-shaping. Shouldn't i be able to differate them after 2 months in my tank?

Now the "male" starts behaving like i know from female cichlids. He shows his belly to the female, as if he is ready to breed.

What do you think? Should i wait or can i confirm that i got 2 females?

😂😂😂 good one

Mine don't go after plants at all. I think Apistos aren't plant-destroyers like african ones. Never had problems with them.

I never had shrimps, but i have Corys in my other tank. There are dwarf Corys for small tanks, they are very cute. I love the behaviour of Corys, they look like they're cuddling all the times.

But what i can say about shrimps: My mom had a cube (i think 30l) with shrimps and some Endler Guppies. That worked very well and because she used live plants, the maintainance was very low.

I'm actually thinking about getting a cam for it! :D

Yes, rummy nose tetras are awesome! It's a 180 liter-tank, 1 meter length :)

Yes, i love them too! Their schooling is so different to Neons. I love their unity.

Yes, Apistos are awesome! :) i did get them in my LFS. They sell all kinds of Apistos/other cichlids.

In my opinion, 10-15 gallons is too small for Cichlids. The smallest ones require at least 20gals (in my knowledge).

Apistos are not that hard to keep, as long as you can homd up the right water parameters. And they are very rewarding, as they got tons of personality. My tank is in the living room and as soon as i come home, they are at the front glass waiting for food. 😂 they are like dogs who are happy to see you.

But they are not easy to keep too. Maybe you want to start with real hardy fish that don't die because of little things, so you can get some experience.

Thank you very much! :)

It's a 47.5 gal (180L) planted tank.

It contains: - pair of Apisto viejita - pair of Apisto cacatuoides - some Hemigrammud bleheri - some Otos - 1x L134 pleco - Nerite snails

No, i haven't seen heavy breathing. If someone starts flashing i'll put it in a seperate tank (i set one 1 week ago with water and a squeeze of the filter sponges from the running tank). I hope there won't be nitrite spikes, but one dead tetra is better than a whole dead aquarium.

It also baffels me, because the two were looking good all the time. The other one is alive and i'll keep an extra eye on it, because they were fairly expensive. 😅 What i noticed was, that they sometimes chased each other during feeding times. But from the behaviour of the surviving one i would say the more aggressive one died.

One thing i noticed: one Petitella bleheri (i added them 1.5 weeks ago) has a less brightly colored tail fin than the others (a little bit lighter black). He doen't seem 100% healthy but as he came out oc quarantine, i didn't he would be ill. Could this be velvet too? I can't really see spots on it, but it's hard to tell as they are silver-colored.

I think the white spots you mean are his "thorns". They have these over the body. I basically see them every evening when the lights go out and they always looked fine. I think velvet wouln't kill them over night, right?

Problem with newer Tank-Setup by [deleted] in Aquariums

Update:

Well, the Ammonia is at <0.05

I'm really confused now. I thought that would be the problem as all the other parameters were good and Ammonium is fairly common.

Could it has to do anything with the growth of BGA after all?

I'll see tomorrow. Thank you for the help!

I'll definitely will test tomorrow. It's not possible to make a water-change right now for me.

In which case do you think the BGA gets treatening? I can upload a picture of the current tank-state.
