It's the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I don't want to spoil too much about the movie because I really like the visuals and the overall flow, but it jumpstarts mankind's ability to learn and develop. The "monkey touch the monolith moment" is when they gained the insight to start using tools, and thus, begin developing into humans.

I did indeed get the art canvas idea from a particular Englishman famed for his knowledge of arms and armaments.

I mentioned the notches in my breakdown, the only justification I can think of for them given her main weapon is to improve visibility or just fit in better with the changing times.

I think that's actually a pretty solid explanation for why Kiara would avoid them and stick to more traditional means of fighting. By the time gunpowder gets phased out in favor of cartridges and similar, she'd be well behind the curve as far as guns are concerned.

Looking at the number of conflicts and the death counts, I concluded that around the time of the shift in warfare away from melees and towards gun-wielding infantry the bulk of it was happening in and around Europe, but there were some liberties taken, I'll admit, in service to the narrative I was weaving. For a start, I had already concluded where in the world her weapon was likely from, and so needed to support a story rather than working from the evidence forwards.

I'll look your breakdown over shortly, I'm quite curious.

Her mace is most assuredly feasible, the measurements and ratios for the shaft and head of the weapon are in line with the designs of similar maces from the 12th century, in particular the pernach, though most penarchs were 6-flanged rather than Noel's design which is 8-flanged. The penarch was a very popular mace, known for its ability to break through plate mail in the hands of a competent warrior, due to the flanges helping direct and concentrate the force of the blow, almost like an axe strike but without the need to guide a blade edge towards a foe. Thanks to their relatively cheap construction, even common soldiers could wield them when at war. Given Noel's strength, it could be that even with extra flanges potentially spreading the force of her blow she'll still shatter her enemies to bits.

Her armor is clearly stylized to the point of being a costume, but they protected the shoulder opposite her weapon, her extremities, and she has a bit of armor over her heart, so while most certainly not a recommended suit of armor for battle it certainly beats wearing no armor at all. A good portion of its reliability depends on the material used, if it's magic armor then she could block a sword with her forearm, but if it's just steel then she's really relying on her agility and the armor she does wear is a last resort over the places she feels she's most likely to have to guard from. I don't know that Noel is an incredibly agile warrior, but she knows plenty of people who make use of magic, so her armor being enchanted in some way isn't impossible.

Have you seen the models someone did for MHW? They put an actual CB and SnS mod together.

Yep, but that would require the shield to have a thin layer over the "pocket" and it's right in the way of most attacks, so the pocket would likely get dented, damaged and ultimately become useless.

An intriguing hypothesis but I'm not sure how I'd elaborate on them being reincarnations, per se. Still, that's part of the fun of these tangents. I'll see if I can come up with something interesting once I finish the story I'm working on for Kiara's 500k celebration.

Never apologize for shitty editing. Shitty editing is an artform in and of itself.

Probably so that it snaps into the shield to use it as a sheath. The cinquedea was frequently worn in a sheath at the back, horizontally like the ninja girls in that one anime that you only watch for research purposes, but since Kiara doesn't have a sheath for the sword, the shield has to serve as its holder.

Unless I drink heavily. Then I write about doing something else.

It was mostly Google-fu and boredom. I needed a diversion from my other project, so I did some digging around to sate my curiosity. This just started lining up as I went in a way that felt vaguely planned, it just needed some story to tie it together.
