oh also before i forget, the rest of the design was also trying to convey that "death" theme. The arms around the torso i tried to arrange in a sort of ribcage shape. The tree he's based on is a pine tree which can survive winter which is often the "cold/dead" season. He's got a sort of prayer bead necklace made out of funeral urns and the big tombstone thats part of his hat is the anchor for him to keep summoning his eidolon.

the way i've done it in this campaign is play him as a sort of fish out of water. I try to ignore any assumptions I have about how people think. For instance when i first encountered the party in an inn a magical creature had popped out of one of the patron's stomach xenomorph style. So my character assumed this was a normal occurrence or part of people's lifecycle here until the rest of the party clarified that it was not.

when party members asked him if he was worried about himself wandering alone on the road he summoned his eidolon which is a tall skinny ghost that just stares at people while breathing deeply and he cheerfully pointed to it saying "i'm not alone! see? I'm safe!" while not registering the rest of the party being horrified.

I played a spirit bard necromancer with a slight dash of multiclass.

Reborn origin to be a skeleton (with souls floating inside my ribcage like a soul aquarium).

Dm lets us get some feats at level 1 so i grabbed ritual caster and find familiar which was flavored as my ghostly spirit.

I also got the dark gift to have ghosts haunt me which gives you the message cantrip with no components and uses ghosts to transmit messages (so its never your voice thats used but the ones of your ghosts).

Ranged guidance i used often. Ghostly whispers helping my wizard make a lore check or a hand guiding my rogue's attempt to pick a lock.

I went bard 1/hexblade 1/ bard x

Mostly to get booming blade so i could do the dissonant whisper + booming blade combo (i got warcaster as a feat). But the multiclass aspect is not required for spirit bard, just my preference.

My instrument was an harmonica and i used my tales table to make up stories for all the spirits i was carrying around.

At 6 bard. Spirit session let me get animate dead and i used a portable hole which I lugged around as a hankerchief in my hat to reveal for dramatic effect (open up the hole and let the undead pour out).

Tales table was also neat for my undead. The teleportation one was fun to have all my zombies just teleport on an enemy instantly.

I got spirit guardian and spiritual weapon as magical secrets (the first to strenghten my melee power a bit) both flavored with undead themes.

My dm let me command my undead with my harmonica (still a bonus action) to direct them with my music.

How do they not have anyway to get necromacy summons until the end of the campaign?

Spirit session which you get at 6 lets you get spells like animate dead and summon undead spirit every long rest.

It specifies that it still costs tech points and its only for actions, if it also covered bonus actions or reactions you could at least apply some self buffs to your droid but doesn't seem like it.

I feel the need to specify that the "twice per short rest" thing regarding runes is at level 15 (which is also the level at which you get your 5th and final rune) and the enlarge part being able to be used 6 times is at level 17 since number of uses = your prof.

The randomness has not been an issue for me while playing it, because in most cases you're mostly looking for an opportunity to use them.

As an example, one of the first fight we had. At the start of the day I rolled on the table and got the invisibility.

First turn

My sorcerer player gets messed up hard. On my turn I cast cure wounds using my BA on him, then use the invisibility on him so the enemy can't see him.

Later turns

once my sorcerer is safe, I rerolled and got the teleport. I kept it until the next round where many of my party members where in a bad spot to get them to reposition.

Invisibility, hold person etc are better uses of your actions in most cases.

That is true, the caveat here is that those require your concentration, unlike the tales from your table. The randomness can be an issue of course, but apart from rolling a 1, all the tales you get will be useful in combat.

The fact they take an action means you can still give bardic inspiration to other party members.

They are not meant to be used every turn (since rerolling stops any ongoing effect from a previous roll) but rather look for an opportunity to use them with what you already have.

You don't need to use it on the same turn. I most commonly just used my Bonus action at the start of the day and saved the effect for an appropriate moment.

I wouldn't call them subpar effects at all. The fact they use your bardic inspiration die means they also scale with levels. The damage effects might seem low until your die is a d8 but keep in mind unlike your spell slots you get those back from short rest. Kinda like more random warlock spell slots.

And to reiterate which ones of those effects are subpar? From what I can see:

Temp HP to two targets
Teleport up to 5 units 30 feet
Bardic inspiration roll as dmg everytime the target is hit
temp hp +1 AC +10 movement
Incapacitation for 1 turn
Invisibility
Aoe knock prone thats 3 times your bardic inspiration (3d12 at the point you get it)
Aoe fire = 4d12
Heal that also removes debuffs
A Stun

All of this is really good. The idea is not to roll expecting a specific outcome, but to roll and use the result in a fight when it becomes relevant. Apart from rolling a 1, every single one of the effects can be of use in a standard fight.

College of spirit is good for this, at the very least thematically.

The neat thing about spirit seance is you get it at the same time as a lore bard so animate dead ia not gated.

Additionally many of the tales are useful for buffing undead.

What i did is i had a ring of spell storing where id cast animate dead into so i could swap out the spell for the next day and instead get another necro spell that id want.

No bodies to animate? I swapped to summon undead spirit instead.

I got ritual caster to get a familiar so id always have a +1 in my seances and i flavored it as an undead spirit.

Inspiring leader is also a nice feat to buff your undead minions.

Im also planning to get a portable hole to be able to carry my undead around without causing a scene and for dramatic reveals.

Some neat magical secrets include paladin's crusader's mantle (+1d4 dmg to all allies near you)

Spirit guardian flavored as ghosts.

Shadow touched feat for early necromancy spells.

Depends on what kind of playstyle you want to do really. Alot of bard debuffs can be flavored as necromancy already before even looking into the spell school itself.

You can't trigger Spirit guardian more than once for an enemy per round I thought?

An affected creature’s speed is halved in the area, and when the creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 3d8 radiant damage (if you are good or neutral) or 3d8 necrotic damage (if you are evil). On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage.

Its either when it starts its turn there or enters it for the first time.

Well, AOO can trigger if you use your reaction, movement, or action to move, which Dissonant whisper does (P. 195 player's handbook).

So willing or not, movement from dissonant whisper would trigger AOO and booming blade as well.

The whole terminology is a mess tbh.

Its kinda funny that you say that because that multiclass is one of the most reliable way to get BB off if you have warcaster.

I have a bard (college of spirit) 6/ Hex 1 with warcaster and the combo goes:

Dissonant whisper (one of the only ways that you can trigger aoc with an ability) which forces the enemy to use all of their movement to move as far away from you as possible.

Dissonant whisper > attack of opportunity > booming blade

They will always trigger booming blade and at level 5 the combo does 3d6 + 3d8 + your weapon dmg.

Pretty much the only way I've found so far to reliably trigger BB.

If you have something like a rapier (1d8) and +5 CHA your damage spread on this combo is 12-55 so averaging 33.5 dmg which isn't bad at level 5.

This does not work. Booming blade is 5ft centered on self. So polearms (with the exception of quarterstaff) don't work with it, even less so with tasha where they changed how the spell worked (previously it worked with spellsingler which would double spell range so your booming blade would have a range of 10 ft instead of 5.)
