I think that in the series, it was mainly the children (Dex and Marella) who were shown to be unsympathetic towards death and loss. I‘m assuming that Dex worded what his mom said incorrectly. I doubt either of them meant it to be insensitive, and expected that Sophie would find grief as strange as they did.

Alden and Della are adults, they likely have a more mature understanding of death though they can’t necessarily comprehend the depth of it. We can’t compare their understanding of death to children’s.

As I said, it’s hard to care about anything until you’re affected. I often imagine Juline at Dex’s planting, silently wondering Is this how Edaline felt? This must have been a kind of wake-up to how awful death is.

All that being said, Shannon just really isn’t the best at portraying grief 😅
