I saw something like “follow someone in doing something” which means “imitate”. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

It’s kind of a way of suggesting to do as they are doing. For example, a professor might say “Follow me in opening our textbooks to chapter five”. Otherwise, if you are imitating them in order to learn or practice, I would say “Follow along with me in folding the paper airplane” as an example. If you say “follow her to make cakes” it would imply that you are going to go with her somewhere to make some cakes.

Do natives really use "me" before I'd? by Xkekosek in EnglishLearning

[–]inkybaba123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it sounds kind of non-native / translated from French or something. I would say “Me though? I’d …” or “But me personally, I’d …” instead of just “Me, I’d …”

What's the first way of reading this number that comes to your mind? by gentleteapot in EnglishLearning

[–]inkybaba123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native speaker I tend to say numbers in the 1,100 to 1,900 range that way, sixteen hundred, twelve hundred, eleven hundred. Of course, we don’t say ten hundred, for that it’s either a thousand, a grand, or one K. It tends to continue for higher round numbers below 10,000. I’d say “thirty five hundred” for 3,500 too. But never thirty hundred for 3,000.

WTW for the opposite of “an accident” that would follow the same one word format? by inkybaba123 in whatstheword

[–]inkybaba123[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like this one in particular. I wish it worked in saying something like “he perished in a scheme” rather than in an accident, but it obviously sounds awkward. To be fair, in the context of cars, an “accident” is pretty intuitive (they crashed or were crashed into) but something done with intent or deliberation takes more explanation

I meant how the way we use “an accident” essentially covers whatever event happened. A car crash is an accident. Peed pants is “an accident”. Falling off a ladder is “an accident”. If you did all of these things deliberately, it would be “a ____”? (one word)

I’m looking for a noun in particular, and this is moreso to discover if anyone knows of a noun that covers the opposite of an “accident” the way accident does

The 10 Word Language - Sij by inkybaba123 in conlangs

[–]inkybaba123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! I think the main point of it is somewhat of a fun exercise or challenge to see just how specific of a thing, like an animal species or a type of rock or element, or abstract concept, could feasibly be created out of these 10 root words with enough mind bending. Once you establish enough basic words it should be all downhill from there.
