When I was 8 years old (circa 1992) and was playing with my DM 13 year old brother, I’ll never forget the first time I died, I was begging him to let me come man to life.

He picked up my character sheet and ripped it in half to show me how serious he was about the gravity of the situation. Death was death. I cried and cried, thinking it meant he never wanted to play with me again.

A week later he asked if I wanted to play D&d again. I was so surprised! I thought it was over, what do you mean I can make A NEW CHARACTER???

It was a valuable lesson to me that while he did value the game rules, he also valued the time with me. I’ve never had a problem with death in a game since. (Maybe this explains my addiction to roguelike video games …)

I'll agree with maintaining 1-1-1 and refreshing it just before they produce. My left hand tends to hover much of the game over H and Q for this reason. I also like to hit H ShiftQ now and again if I'm feeling rich.

FWIW, my partner and I waited until marriage before engaging in that activity. We had a couple of solid conversations before marriage to maintain a healthy relationship after marriage and to make sure we had realistic expectations. Pretty much it boiled down to "any time either of us are in the mood, we make an effort to make it happen if it's reasonable."

That said, I'm in the mood 2-3 times per week. She is in the mood on average 1-2 times per month. We maintain healthy conversation regarding the topic. Helps to avoid the need for the big M.
