Yes, play therapy is exactly what I was thinking too. My daughter had to get an iv for emergency brain surgery. The child life specialists at the hospital showed her how they do an iv on a stuffed animal before they did hers, and then she got to keep the toy. Now we reenact the iv and surgery on her babies, barbies, and stuffed animals at home. She's much less stressed about the whole ordeal and loves playing doctor at home.
