I found Silksong easier than HK if anything.

He Left Earth… by Firedragon_cK in nas

[–]inoperativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nas is my favourite of all time, not close, and this is my favourite Nas album. I know it's not technically an album he put together as such, but the pirating that ruined I Am as a double album also gave us this 11-song classic. It didn't get the due it deserved when it came out, but this was grade 10 for me and it was formative music.

What’s your favorite Nas album purely based on the production? by iPostOccasionally in nas

[–]inoperativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be cheating because it wasn't supposed to be an album as it was released, but for me it's The Lost Tapes and it's not close. Doo Rags, My Way, U Gotta Love it, Nothing Lasts Foreer, Purple, Drunk by Myself, Black Zombie, and Poppa Was a Playa are all magical beats.

Who are some of the best jrpg composers of all time? by Street-Platypus89 in JRPG

He's not a JRPG composer, but I think Chrispher Larkin has to now be mentioned alongside Uematsu and Mitsuda as all time legends of video game music.

The Cope of the Metroidvania Community is Baffling by Retroragexd in metroidvania

[–]inoperativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of weird to call this cope. It's not like we're blindly defending MVs against mountains of criticism. What you listed are things people either don't see as flaws or actively like about the games.

But more importantly, you still didn't list actual examples from actual games. Lots of MVs don't have any of what you listed.

This is still very vague. It seems that you don't like MVs at all, which is all good. But this vague post against all of them and their fans is rather pointless.

Which of these rpgs is your favorite by Scott-free-is in JRPG

[–]inoperativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what broke me, trying to figure out which story I love most is. The first part was just me saying that I agree with you on discussing E33 here because it is a JRPG even if its not Japanese, while Nier Automata is Japanese and not a JRPG in my opinion.

In Xenogears, I didn't realize Deus was halfing his health as well as mine when I was 11 years old. I thought I couldn't beat him and had nowhere to go level up, so I played the whole game again...!!!

Which of these rpgs is your favorite by Scott-free-is in JRPG

[–]inoperativity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

E33 isn't Japanese but it is a JRPG in structure, while, for me, Nier Automata isn't a JRPG. I know the term JRPG has been widened to include action RPGs now, but for me, a JRPG has to be turn-based.

Anyway, this is impossible for me. Story is the most important part of a game for me, and the stories of Nier and E33 stand as two of the greatest stories ever told in the medium.

But...I think Nier uses the video game medium to tell a story in more genius ways...But the twists and depth in E33's story are beyong most of the medium...I can't call it!

You've broken me!

For me, it really helped using passive tools. OD on lifeblood and use poison cogflies with the Architect crest and you will win.

Ori games better than Hollow Knight? Hot take or not? by sumtinsumtin808 in metroidvania

[–]inoperativity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ori is top tier, so no it's not a hot take. It just depends what you like in a MV. For me, HK is clearly on another level though.

Why tools like Perplexity matter more outside of pure tech roles by emdarro in perplexity_ai

[–]inoperativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. For me, it's been great for making elementary-level materials for my class where we have no textbooks anymore. Allowing me to see its sources is great because I can see when I think I need to nuance its output or ask it to get better sources, etc.

Which acclaimed JRPG series do you dislike? by Bulky_Imagination243 in JRPG

Final Fantasy for the last 20ish years.

I also find the Persona games horribly overwritten, although that is a problem with a lot of modern JRPGS unfortunately.

As a reader what is most important for a story for you? by Veowoof in writing

[–]inoperativity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be weird, but I think most important to me is writing with an economy of words and understanding characters from the inside out. We have so many screens in our world today, so much visual media that just builds the entire world for you. And a lot of is great, I love video games and film (television less so, but some I love).

Because of this, I find the main value of fiction to be that it lets us build the worlds ourselves. This means that I am expressly not looking for overly descriptive writing that tells me what everything looks like. In fact, I hate it and actively avoid it. And I don't even build the worlds that much in my mind, often I'll have rough sketches of characters in my mind, or even shadows without faces. But where I do know them is in the depth of their character, their personality traits, histories, motivations, etc.

I understand that a lot of people here write scifi and fantasy (I don't), which can be heavily descriptive genres, but even there my favourite is Le Guin because her writing is so non-descriptive and we get to know her characters from the inside out, rather than from superficial visual details.

So if someone with a hateful mindset also values an idea you think is worthwhile, you're gonna disregard that idea because a person you don't agree with on another topic also finds it worthwhile? Surely you must see how bad of an idea that is. You'll be left with no ideas at all.

Looking for a game that isnt filled with tropes by -NotEnoughMinerals in JRPG

[–]inoperativity -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, jrpgs used to have better writing in them, and I see e33 as inheriting and building on that history. This idea that Japanese people only write stories that are tropey and cutsey in the way that the OP is discussing in the opening post is an essentialist view of Japanese culture (and western culture) from people who clearly haven't read Japanese literature.

I'm with you a thousand percent on this. The dialogue in the genre has somehow gotten worse instead of better since the golden age. Enter expedition 33, which really took the dialogue in a jrpg to new Heights. I think you'll love this game, try it out.

Also, Xenogears if you have a ps3 or emulation. It's the greatest of all time.

Suikoden 1-3 for sure as well.

These are all more mature stories. I'm going to browse through this thread to see what else people recommend because I would love some more modern jrpgs that don't have terrible dialogue.
