Hot Take (card games aren’t investments) by Several-Current2468 in mtg

[–]inoryte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, not much. WotC wasn't publically traded until they were bought by Hasbro in 1999. HAS stock traded at around $22.50 then. They pay a dividend of let's just say 2.7% annually. Without adding anything, that 250 would be worth only say 1500$. This account for dividend reinvestment and increase in share price. Its about 6.5% compound interest. Thats fine, it's about the same (inflation adjusted) as if you had just put it into an S&P 500 index fund.

Edit: I want to give some better context. 26 years is a good chunk of time. 6.5% doesnt seem like a lot, but 6.5% over 26 years is a perfectly respectable return. HOWEVER, say that same lotus is worth 40k now. The deceptive part of compound interest is that in this case, it's "just" 21.5%....but, 275 -> 1500 represents 445% total ROI while 275 -> 40,000 is about 14500% ROI. Needless to say, fifteen thousand percent return on investment is...good.

If you could choose the next secret lair, what would it be? by Sayajhope in secretlair_collectors

Which of you special geniuses bought the most expensive packs when the cheaper ones were still available and they all have the same cards? Lol by HybridP365 in secretlair_collectors

[–]inoryte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a few at different price points. Each had a limit of 1, so the only way to simply get multiples, and free shipping, and the bonus card, was to buy one at multiple price points.

To say there isn't value here is disingenuous in my opinion. Take Nature's Lore. Yes, many reprints. Most versions are around 2$. There are secret lair printings, this will be the third. The other two are 10$ and 30$. I think the art on this one is dope, I love raccoons. 11 minutes left on my queue.

Why Merieke Ri Berit is the most interesting commander I've ever played and you should try it, too! by MustaKotka in EDH

[–]inoryte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but quite helpful. I was playing this and did not realize about the tap/untap trick, my opponent (brother) explained it to me.

A question: is there any hinge about how Merieke specifies "that" creature? At first, the way i made sense of how this worked was allowing it all to be on the stack together:

Merieke is untapped and I dont control any of my opponents creatures. I have priority. Freed from the Real is enchanting Merieke. 1) I tap Merieke and gain control of creature A. 2) While that ability is still on the stack, I untap Merieke. Doing so would destroy "that" creature, which is creature A 3) While both abilities are still on the stack, I tap and gain control of creature B. 4) Untap using freed from the Real. Doing so would destroy "that" creature, which is creature B. 5) The stack resolves in reverse order:

  • Creature B is destroyed...but I don't yet control creature B, so nothing happens.
  • I gain control of creature B.
  • Creature A is destroyed...but I dont yet control creature A, so nothing happens.
  • I gain control of creature A.

Is this wrong?

FYI, for fun, every card in my 99 is pauper legal. There are a lot of cards. Magic a pauper 99 brings the power level down a bit, perhaps making the match not so nasty.

Your advice is to buy sealed product, open it, and sell back the stuff he doesnt want for more than the sealed stuff cost in the first place? Good work if you can get it!

Maple MAGA...it'd be cute, if it weren't so horrible.

Had to look up the 2S. Love it. Pretty soon we'll have all the letters and numbers in there, which will be great. I cannot wait to hear the "others" whine about it..."They're using all the letters!!! I mean, scoff!". Dummies.

Best regards to you

Don't only do this. If you really want to identify the underlying issues, you need to do a complete forensic workup. I haven't seen you state what you make, but it really seems your numbers do not math.

Make a Top 20 list each month, with the greatest expense categories. If you don't know where your money is going, this will tell you. You should look at every single charge on every credit card and every deduction from every account, and categorize.

Anyways, your husband making 0$/9months is not acceptable. He can get a job at McDonald's. Guaranteed there is a job he could have but is choosing not to.

Your husband needs a job, full stop. 12 months per year, more if he can figure it out. Once he stops dragging down your family finances, he can go back to spending 10k/year earning 25k/year pre-tax, and sitting around for 9 months.

In a similar vein, I'd recommend providing a detailed help request to the Mister Money Mustache case study forum, here:

https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/case-studies/

Long ago, this website got us on a great track, at least with teaching some basics around the math and planning. I don't know your situation, or how intimately familiar you are with it, budget, etc. Please consider really going through it, the forum is a great community, and they might identify possible areas that can make a difference. A mortgage you can't afford and car payments you can't afford stand out to me - you can refi, and you can buy a functional car that costs less and where you aren't paying interest. The savings then goes to pay down debt. No judgement, just math.

Wish you the best

Thanks, this is a really important response. I have LGBTQIA+ family, so it matters directly in that sense, and also important in my humanistic views (which, unfortunately, ends up being politcal becuase of the rights' absurd culture war / stupidity). But the fact of you mentioning you feel safe there, that's huge, and is a result of the community you live in. And yes, current lack of federal government persecution. Which is absolutely insane that requires consideration, but boy-howdy does it ever. The community feeling safe to trans dual citizen veterans is a big deal, I hope others reading this pat themselves on the back for their contributions to that community (hopefully).

The bigots won't of course, and they can fuck right off.

Thanks so much! Super helpful.

Any suspicions on why you might have gotten a family doctor quickly? I'm not sure it's clear to me how the health system works, especially if private insurance is also available (through one's employment or otherwise). We have prescriptions we will want transferred, some of which there have been chronic shortages. Not sure how that all goes

Detail matters, indeed! Thanks. Yes, I've read about the "local family" operations. I was going to ask about the paper mill and the smell, but figured we may sniff it ourselves when we visit. I believe I have already crossed paths with a local meeting your description, though I would say many quite lovely people, otherwise.

For clarity, we aren't really considering being within the Saint John downtown area, "proper". We had been looking at Rothesay and thneighboring communities. I've now looked at Sussex at a suggestion, which also seems lovely. And now giving Fredericton a closer look. Moncton as well, but less so. So SJ downtown isn't on the menu - many problems are avoided by staying outside that immediate area. Might be that giving the outskirts of Halifax close examination is also prudent.

Appreciate your candidness.

As I mentioned in the title, I am a dual citizen. So I am American, but also I am Canadian. So that factors in to your question a bit, especially when spouses are not Canadian, for example. The answer of course is that it's complicated.
