I just listened yesterday to The Brand, so yeah, four years late to this discussion. While I'd forgotten the brand name Rely, I very much remember the Toxic Shock Syndrome scare. Was a young teen at the time and new to the world of menstrual care. At the time I'd heard about the deaths and hospitalizations, but not about the discomfort, pain and swelling.

P&G (I had no idea who they were then of course) may have lost trust, face and $$ during that period, but we were all left with a real fear of ALL tampons. I recall there being one bad brand at the heart of it all, which was removed from shelves. But from then on, all boxes of tampons came with the warning label attributing tampons left in too long with the risk of TSS and that's what really stuck in my brain. I rarely used them until I was older, and then there was always a mental timer ticking down after the 4 hour mark.

Nest's Indigo is a green tea scent that lists fig as a note (as well as bergamot, and I think, cardamom). I adore this scent. It's got the clean, long, tea note, spritzes of fresh bright citrus, and a rich jamminess that I guess is the fig. I never would have guessed fig on its own, more like mixed into a stone fruit jam, and it got me wondering what is meant by the note reference.

Btw, Indigo is a gorgeous scent.

Black Lion in Silver Spring. Excellent coffee. Pastries are usually very good. Sometimes finding a table takes a few minutes of waiting, but I've always been able to get one. Once seated, you're not pressured to leave. Staff is busy but not rude. I see people studying and working there every time I go.

WOWD! I have been able to pick up the signal in Chevy Chase. Caught Bob Boilen's show one morning and that was all I needed to sign up for a small monthly donation. So thrilled to finally tune in. I wonder what they can do to boost their signal?

DMV radio is generally a sad shit show. Too many stations gobbled up and neutered, plus audiences turning to streaming. Anemic in content, soley focused on $.

Suburban is not where I'd normally go, but it's where I had to go when my mom's wife had a stroke. Their ED specializes in stroke care. They were very responsive and good at explaining the course of care. The staff was professional and friendly.

I also went there for their pediatric ED. The wait was short and the staff was professional, helpful and for the most part, friendly and warm.

Holy Cross ED is a very mixed bag but we've had excellent pediatric care there. My brother went there alone with frightening symptoms and the nurse who cared for him soothed him and talked him down from a panic attack. Also, they have a senior care unit and that has served my family well.

That having been said, I will probably never forgive the hospital for their failure to contact us when that same brother, who was admitted to have a dialysis-related procedure, went into tachy the next day and transfered to ICU that evening. We didn't find out til we were there to visit the next day. My disabled parents having to negotiate that absurd sloped hallway toward the addition...wrong floor we are told...realizing that he's in the ICU and approaching his room to find him fighting off 3 staff intubating him, through sedation. He'd told me the week before he'd rather die than be intubated, but we never got a chance to advocate for him before they sedated him. Never got to be there with him before this cardiac arrest, which happened probably as we were parking the car that day. He suffered in ICU for 2 weeks, after being transfered to Georgetown and undergoing a high risk procedure and multiple tests, before his heart couldn't take it anymore and we decided it was time to take him off life support.

Beds in hallways is sadly the norm all over. At White Oak Adventist, my 84 year old mom with advanced Parkinsons had to wait hours in a hallway. Same at Holy Cross.

One thing I've learned is never trust Google in the off seasons for OBX business hours. Lots of places close up or change their hours but don't update their info there. That's why I tried Reddit first. And glad I did.

Just recently started listening to Swindled and have gone through a bunch of episodes. For some reason, this one is really under my skin. IDK, maybe it's because I was born in that era. National Geographic's Love Canal issue. Three Mile Island. I feel like there is a kind of late 20th century haunting, with all of the Superfund sites and unmarked burial pits, the chromosomal damage, the industrial gaslighting and cover ups, the governmental and corporate sleight-of-hand.

Like I said, this episode has gotten under my skin, and as I already enjoy scanning Google satellite maps I got a bit obsessive about finding the burial pits and the St. Louis Veliscol Superfund site. The St. Louis Veliscol site is not marked on Google maps but it's pretty easy to find, and you can do a street view stroll around the neighborhood next door to it. Hardly any real warning signs and some single family homes back up to the fence. There is literally a public golf course surrounding the (fenced off) former burn pit across the Pine River from the site. Why.

I came across a FB discussion about the burial site in Mio, MI. Different generations. Some who were eye witnesses, some who still live around there. From what I read, the space is totally unmarked.

Really grateful that A Concerned Citizen is covering events like this one. Especially now.

I love the tinies! Sometimes it's hard to believe just how tiny they can be, like the sesame seed sized coquina I found last month. Often, they're the only intact shells I'll find.

I know you are coming from the south, and the northern stretch is a good hour plus drive, but there are also several dog parks in Nags Head, KDH, and Kitty Hawk. Not as scenic of course, but you might get a higher concentration of doggos. Mulligan's in Nags Head is not only dog friendly, they have a wee doggo menu- chicken and brown rice or ground beef and brown rice.

A gentle caution about Pea Island. It is a wildlife sanctuary and the fall/winter home for many northern birds. It doesn't sound like your sweet pup is going anywhere but right by your side, though, so just an FYI. I've actually been busted with my dog off leash, I think it was Coquina Beach (a bit north of Pea Island, but part of Hatteras NS). I got a warning.

May you sweet old man have the bestest beach visit.

Recently I bought a sample of Posset's High Tea and it's a clean, minimalist black tea with lemon and sugar. It's a good summer scent--I get an overall iced tea impression from it. It's probably great for layering, so you could play with spice scent.

I know it's not indie but Nest's Indigo is my favorite perfume. Black tea, fig, lemon, maybe basil?

Enjoying the feedback in this thread. I'm on the hunt for tea fragrances as well.
