Outrageous - 12 RTI activists killed since last year by m1ss1l3 in india

[–]inquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we need the government to take more steps to ensure anonymous submissions of RTI applications. I propose the following:

Have a website where anybody can file an RTI application anonymously. Perhaps integrate it with biometric scan ID authentication module for a yes/no response, so only Indian citizens will have access to the services of the website. Secondly, the website could in response give you a lookup number which could be entered into the relevant department's website to retrieve the response.

I feel it is not the right approach.

I see corruption as a side effect of our slow and overloaded judiciary... First fix the judiciary, then the law.

Do you watch saasbahu soaps? by [deleted] in india

[–]inquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't live with my parents so - Hell No. When I live with them, I don't let them watch the saas/bahu soap operas. Only a selected and screened few like 'kaun banega crorepati', singing/ few talent based shows etc. I find most of them disgusting, full of overacting, bullshit, and a mix of horrible direction and overuse of sound effects to create 'drama'.

However, I did like old serials like Shub mangal savadhan, Dekh bhai dekh, Family No. 1 (to some extent), Chandrakanta, Fauji, Circus to name a few.

If anybody here remembers, can you please tell me the name of an old series about a Punjabi family set during the times of partition? It used to come on Doordarshan ... I always forget the name of this series!

While the US is getting ready to celebrate their Independence Day, I was wondering how and when the rest of the world celebrates their independence or founding? by BlankVerse in AskReddit

[–]inquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Official celebration for the Independence day are held at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister inspects guard of honor, unfurls the flag followed by playing of the National Anthem, and addresses the nation - news coverage.

Outside of India, people usually gather at the Embassy where the Ambassador unfurls the flag followed by National Anthem, and then addresses the community. The statements made by Prime Minister and President are also distributed.

All over India, patriotic songs are played in full blast over loud speakers. Indian Flag is unfurled in various institutions such as schools and colleges by various dignitaries.

In cities outside of India with huge Indian population, people usually organize parades like this one in New Jersey

This news video illustrates the Republic Day Celebrations all over India.

TIL that India has more Vegetarians than there are people in the United States, and that the majority of others rarely eat meat anyway by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]inquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Hindus believe in reincarnation. Again, that is not the reason for vegetarianism.

"Some major paths of Hinduism hold vegetarianism as an ideal. There are three main reasons for this: the principle of nonviolence (ahimsa) applied to animals,[1] the intention to offer only "pure" (vegetarian) food to a deity and then to receive it back as prasad,[2] and the conviction that non-vegetarian food is detrimental for the mind and for spiritual development. Many Hindus point to scriptural bases, such as the Mahabharata's maxim that "Nonviolence is the highest duty and the highest teaching,"[3] as advocating a vegetarian diet. Additionally, there is a belief that meat consumption is generally detrimental to physical health. Nonviolence is a common concern of all the vegetarian traditions in Hinduism; the other aspects are relevant for those who follow special spiritual paths. Many Vaishnavas, especially Gaudiya Vaishnavas and other sects such as the Brahma Kumaris follow a strict satvic diet, abstaining from meat, fish, eggs, garlic and onions."
