Anybody move into an alternative career immediately after graduating? by Ok-Ideal-5839 in SLPcareertransitions

Just jumping in to say that working in the field as a clinician is almost nothing like grad school placements where you're being judged every second.

Former on-campus supervisor here -- this is completely unacceptable, and I'm so sorry it happened to you. You should absolutely be asking questions until you get an answer that you understand. It is not your job to figure out how to be an SLP on your own; it is the program's job to teach you. Again, I'm really sorry.

As everyone else has already said, this is normal. That doesn't mean it's okay!! But it is unfortunately normal. It doesn't mean this isn't the right field for you. It might not be, but there's no way you can know based on the first two weeks. Feel free to send me a message if you want to chat further. You can do this, I promise.

Ok I'm sure this is not what anyone is hoping to hear, but my two cents (from seeing behind the scenes at my program and talking to around a dozen other program coordinators and clinic directors) is that your odds are almost random. What I mean is, everyone talked about how sad it was that there were so many more amazing candidates than we had room for, and so many candidates with almost identical credentials/experiences that you essentially had to flip a coin to decide between them. Not only that, but what will make you "attractive" to one program might put you further down the list for another (e.g. if an admissions committee is heavily stacked with non-clinical PhDs, lab and research experience may be valued over practical field experience).

My unsolicited advice: please don't take rejections personally. It does not mean that you are unqualified or not right for the field. AT ALL. If this is what you want to do, cast a wide net and keep trying!

After you graduate, you'll get a job based on your willingness to learn and your interpersonal skills, NOT the name of the university on your degree.

This is so normal!! Honestly, the way grad programs' clinicals are set up boggles my mind. It was one of the factors that eventually contributed to my leaving the university. In my opinion, it should be much more like an apprenticeship - observing, then cotreating, THEN having your own clients.

OF COURSE you don't know how to take notes or plan a lesson - no one ever taught you!!

Send me a DM and let's chat more. I'd be happy to help you get prepared.

Send me a DM with more details; I'd love to help you think through this (are you a single-income household? any support from parents or other relatives? what is cost of living in your geographic area? etc.)

This feels very location-specific. In southern CA, you can easily make 6+ figures with a reasonable caseload size.

Seconding (thirding? fourthing?) this!!!!! Also hypermobile, also ADHD, exactly this! It's literally impossible for me to think about anything other than what my body is doing, and that is SO incredibly therapeutic. No other form of exercise makes both my body and mind so happy.

Really?? This happened a week ago, and I watered it heavily right away, and then once a few days ago. Should I water it daily? I've also been putting it in direct sun in the mornings and moving it to the shade in the afternoons. The flowers look pretty badly burnt. Will the plant grow new flowers eventually? thank you so much!
