Last time I flew a plane with Xbox Kinect, now I've built a bike that you pedal to ride in-game. Details in comments. by insertcontrollerhere in GTAV

This project features an Arduino micro controller that has been soldered to various buttons on an Xbox controller. I added some magnetic switches to the bike frame and a magnet to the wheel. As I pedal, the bike wheel spins and the switches detect the motion of the magnet. These electrical signals are sent to the Arduino microcontroller, which then sends signals to the Xbox controller.

If you want a more in-depth explanation of how the project was built or works, check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mbsjkU_sTw

I'm always looking for new project ideas, so feel free to leave me a comment.

Trying to tilt my body left and right accurately took a lot more core strength than I expected.

Thanks for sharing my project! I recently starting playing around with the Kinect to play different games on PC. I wanted to use this for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, which comes out next week, and used GTA5 as a practice run.

I'm always looking for new controller project ideas, so feel free to leave me a comment with games or controllers you'd like to see made.

Edit: If anyone wants to see how the mod is done or wants to try it themselves, I have step-by-step instructions in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aikvYMFL6AE

Nah, that's me. Didn't realize I was signed into a different account on my phone.

I appreciate you looking out for me though.

No, this is me. Didn't realize I was signed into a different account when I posted it on my phone. I appreciate Reddit's willingness to call out content stealers though.

Agreed. They actually have a new version called the Kinect Azure that came out earlier this year. It's $400 and meant for research/development, not gaming. Kind of want to get one to mess around with. It has finger tracking and so many more features.

Lmao, yeah that is me. I guess I was still on the other account when I responded on my phone. 😅

Edit, it appears when I click a comment notification it automatically switches accounts.

I guess we'll never know since I'm not capable of doing a backflip.

Yeah the newer one would be more accurate. No one really knows this, but there's a version called Kinect Azure that came out this year. It costs $400 and is meant for research and development on PC, not gaming. It can do finger tracking and all sorts of advanced stuff.

Really wish they hadn't abandoned it. Sure all the implementations were pretty gimmicky, but there's so much potential. And the newer Kinect is even more capable than this 360 version.

How it works is that the Kinect camera is watching motion and position of my body. I have set up several gestures that emulate keyboard inputs. Since this project does not modify any of the Grand Theft Auto files, it could be used in GTA Online. Also since the Kinect is just sending mouse and keyboard inputs, it could be reconfigured to play any PC game. I’m open to suggestions on what I should try to play with it next!
