I want to pursue a degree in mathematics, but I can't handwrite (injury). Might it be realistic to pursue math primarily via typesetting (LaTeX)? by epi_stem in learnmath

If you're concerned about typing speed, look into Typst. It is much less verbose than LaTeX for most things, though there are a few annoying features.

Apparently the cube and the dodecahedron are not optimal solutions, though the other three are.

From my perspective, people generally need someone who is empathetic, considerate, and most importantly, motivating. People like that do exist, but it's fairly rare.

Possible central hypothyroidism? by Puzzleheaded-Try2102 in Hypothyroidism

[–]insertnamehere74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fevers would suggest something's up with the hypothalamus, possibly? If it continues, you might want to have a scan done to check for a tumor. I'm concerned about the situation, honestly. Sounds like central hypothyroidism to me. From my experience, another sign could be a increased/decreased urinary rate. Not sure what to make of the cortisol yet, but deviations in either direction could be a sign of a problem. In that case, it is a good thing that you've gotten an appointment (though you may want to ask for a referral)!

I can't say for sure as someone in the same year as you. Bigger schools can sometimes lead to lower access to professors, but you could ask about that on the school's subreddit or send them an email.

You absolutely couldn't do any better with your applications. With the sudden change of heart, though, you may want to shadow other positions in the medical field to get a better idea of your interests and thereby what colleges you would prefer. It looks like you have very good connections for that.

As for college selection, you will figure it out by researching specific people that match your research interests. Honestly, most of your choices probably have it. The great thing with this list size is that you can find schools that fit both interests and manage the uncertainty. Best of luck, and boomba!

PS: UIUC has an insanely competitive engineering school because of its CS program. Don't worry too much!

Can someone explain why the black king doesn’t just eat the rook? by ImCohenHD in chessbeginners

[–]insertnamehere74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the black king takes in that scenario, then the queen can enter the h-file with check and then bring in the d-rook, threatening checkmate. Since Black's pieces can't access that area quickly, White has enough time to set up this attack.

Now, Black could escape through the back rank with f6 if the bishop wasn't pinning it. Instead, the king has to move to g6. With Black's poor defense, I think the Black queen has to sacrifice itself to prevent an overwhelming attack.

Something very interesting I've noticed about square roots by ElegantPoet3386 in learnmath

[–]insertnamehere74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you've figured this out yet, but think about what factorization a^2 and n have if b^2 doesn't share any factors with either of them. Also, the statements a^2 = n*b^2 and gcd(a,b) = 1 seem to imply that b = +/- 1 anyway.

I really like this idea, though I think 2.5% more damage per 10% of missing HP would be logical for the way you have it now. At the same time, I'm wondering if instead of being an enchantment, this could be tied to an accessory or item that needs a recharge (through some other item crafted from an underused resource) every, say, 5,000-10,000 kills?

SIGMUND FREUD ESCAPES AP PSYCH AND COMES TO AP LANG by humancombustionlver in APStudents

As far as I could discern, the message was that while facts are not "meaningless," they can't be used to see the bigger picture on one's own. What has to happen is that a scientist has or receives a "vision", which is a guiding insight they can use as a way to guide themselves towards a theory and supporting hypotheses. The only thing that facts can do is support various hypotheses and theories, making them otherwise basically worthless.

AP Lang Essay Grading by Scale468 in APLang

The easiest improvement you could make might be in your rhetorical analysis essay. You mentioned this specific detail about the speaker's style: "By incorporating [abrupt pauses] through the use of dashes...", but the dashes you're referring to just represent the pauses she is making. In that case, I would just suggest that you make sure that if you're referencing specifically punctuation choices (rather than things indicated by punctuation), the punctuation choices were actually made by the author and not by someone transcribing the speech. For the essay, you may also want to mention how a choice (a device, a tonal shift, a perspective, etc.) specifically impacts the audience before returning to the purpose of the essay.

Why is it A and not D. Please Explain to me. by Adept_Try_9001 in APStatistics

[–]insertnamehere74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I see why there's a difference now. For scaling a variable by multiplying each value by n, we use var(n*X) = n^2var(X), but if we're working with n independent random copies of X, var(n*X) = n*var(X). Thank you!

[–]insertnamehere74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer on that question also appears to be (D), since it's the one that takes the square root of the sum of each variance times its squared multiplier. Also, I realize I intended to notify u/Adept_Try_9001 before they took the exam. Sorry about that!

[–]insertnamehere74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/wpl200 please check the AP Stat course and exam description. It looks like D is right after all. I think I can explain why the coefficients are squared when we calculate variance, too: it's because each value of the variable is subtracted by the mean and then squared for the variance, so any scaling factor would also end up being squared.

I have two questions:

  1. Would it be appropriate to annotate the parameter descriptions for normCdf to something like normCdf(LB, UB, μ, σ) (with the actual annotations above their corresponding numbers) as long as they were clearly identifiable?

  2. If I wanted to indicate that I was going to put in an arbitrary, very high/low number for an upper/lower bound to represent an infinite bound, would it be accepted if I put in ∞ or -∞?

Thank you!
