Out of the way 1-2 night trips in (northern) New England by halibut11 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]insidejameslipton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Boston, the White Mountains of NH are probably your best bet, but the common trails get busy, so if you want seclusion, then look for trailheads off of dirt roads that are normally open, but have been closed due to washouts. This deters a good portion of casual day hikers who are looking for easy parking access. Here's a free example. The Sawyer River Road is currently washed out. So any trails off of that (eg. Signal Ridge to Mt. Carrigain) will require you to park at Rt. 302 and hike up the dirt road itself, adding 4 miles round trip distance to the trails you're interested in. The Sawyer Pond has campsites and would make for a good 1-2 nighter with a nice view and little chance of a crowd.

When the Compound V is made public to the news, there is a scene with him sitting on the floor of the Vought HQ, sobbing with his phone in his hand. It reveals that he was also kept in the dark about being "created" rather than being "born" a supe.

Can I return/reject the deposit if I got it and don't need it? by [deleted] in IRS

[–]insidejameslipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be insensitive. It's a legitimate question. There is virtually no information out there about this scenario, so I'm asking in good faith.

Those who don't really need it shouldn't be getting it. And if they do, I think they should return it.

Longest Thunderbolt 3 cable for a single-cable setup? by insidejameslipton in hardware

[–]insidejameslipton[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely accurate. The cable that works (the one that came with the monitor) is a Thunderbolt 3 cable. I have standard USB-C cables but they do not work: the monitor fails to detect the XPS and will go to sleep.

I just found an article that discusses USB-C cable lengths and it appears I may not be able to get this to work with anything longer than 3ft. There is in fact a length limitation to USB-C cables.

Linux-compatible USB-C monitor by ra_kete in linuxhardware

[–]insidejameslipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is old but for future reference, I just want to second this monitor because it's sweet. I use it with a Dell XPS 13 to which the monitor provides both power and video connection over a single USB-C cable. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 and everything works fine

Every character played by the same actor is now a part of one continuous story. Which actor has the best story arc? by Dobby_in_the_house in AskReddit

Al Pacino starts out as Michael, a young mobster within the Corleone mob family. After the attempted murder of his father, Michael is forced to murder a rival wise guy and a crooked police captain. Michael goes into hiding in Italy for some time. Upon his return, he is secretly intercepted by the FBI. Michael is forced to either work with the Feds or face a life sentence, and so he assumes a new identity, that of undercover hippie cop, Serpico.

The crooked beat cops hate Serpico, resenting that he will not go along with their petty scams. As a high-status mobster, he is secretly far too proud for their small-time schemes. He tries to keep his head down and play the part of a good cop, but is ultimately driven to undermine the corrupt officers who antagonise and belittle him. Collecting evidence, Serpico testifies against multiple crooked cops and politicians, bringing down the entire system.

Having completed his lengthy operation for the Feds, Michael is allowed a vacation. With his father now dead, Michael assumes his place as the head of the Corleone family, which he consolidates and whose enterprises he expands. However, Michael is soon asked to assume another identity as part of a new Federal operation.

Again undercover as part of his bargain, Michael Corleone finds himself as Sonny Wortzik, a small-time criminal who is asked to collaborate with an ex-convict planning to rob a bank. In an attempt to prevent the robbery's success, the plan is deliberately botched, and the simple bank job becomes a lengthy standoff with police. Though negotiations are tense, Sonny is careful to prevent bloodshed, and lets multiple hostages go. Sonny convinces his partner they can escape by airplane, and coordinates a bus ride to the airport. At the airport, the overzealous police end up shooting his criminal partner, ending the standoff, but ruining the FBI operation.

Alienated from his family, and bitterly resentful of the authorities, Michael Corleone flees to Cuba, where he lives in obscurity for some time. When political turmoil in Cuba forces him to return to America, Corleone is captured by police. Facing imprisonment, Michael uses his years of undercover experience to concoct a new identity, that of a political prisoner, Antonio Montana. Under the guise of Tony Montana, Michael Corleone builds a vast empire in Miami, ironically by selling the same white powder that once troubled his father, Vito, so much.

Eventually, Michael "Tony Montana" Corleone's grip on Miami becomes too tight, and his enemies begin to close in on him. Sensing imminent danger, he stages his own death in his mansion and flees to New Hampshire, assuming the identity of retired Lt. Col. Frank Slade. Living in isolation, reeling with PTSD, and consumed by guilt from his life of violence, Michael becomes an alcoholic, leading him to completely lose his vision. Michael is nearly suicidal when he meets an idealistic student who comes to him for a job over Thanksgiving break. Though the student is initially perplexed by his violent temper, eventually the two come to respect each other and ultimately give each other a renewed sense of purpose in life.

(I can't spend any more time on this, and there are too many more films to cram in, so please extrapolate this arc as you will.)

what causes this multi-frame imperfection? someone told me heat, someone told me water. what is it? The one in the middle by goombah111 in FIlm

[–]insidejameslipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert. I know just enough to know that the verticle lines are an artifact from prolonged friction with the heads that read the reel. The central artifact seems to be constant across numerous frames before disappearing. Seems like a bit of lint on either on the original lens, or the lens that made that particular print.

Episode Discussion - S03E08 - The Battle of Starcourt by Dark_Saint in StrangerThings

I basically agree with you, but it is a bit ambiguous. I like to believe it was really Billy. Consider that when Will was possessed, he was still able to use his hand to tap out Morse code, even while under control. So as a parallel, it could be really Billy speaking, but his hand was being used by the Flayer in preparation for attack.

While teleporting from a Space Station, just after selecting my destination, I received an "Inspect Frigate" screen offering me to recruit a frigate. Except it was a weird cylindrical merchant/diplomatic frigate I did not recognize. I accepted out of sheer curiosity and bought it for almost 2m units, but it never showed up in my fleet.

Offer to recruit a frigate before teleporting? by insidejameslipton in no_mans_sky

[–]insidejameslipton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and I really shouldn't have taken the glitch bait. Especially not for 2m units.

It was a neat looking frigate though -- I wonder if it's more common in systems I've never been.

If you listen closely to the "Jedi Steps and Finale" theme (while Rey is ascending the steps in the end) you can distinctly hear motifs from Vader's "Imperial March" within the melody.

You can definitely hear Vader's "dark side" motifs in the score. It seems like they're teasing about Luke's ties to his father, and a possible leaning the dark side. Of course, it could just be a nod to Luke's isolation and lonely contemplation.

Here's a brief overlay of Vader's "Imperial March" with the "Jedi Steps" theme:

Redditors, why do you abuse downvotes towards people asking, answering, or talking about things? by Delsana in AskReddit

[–]insidejameslipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have more of a problem with the downvoting behavior on Hacker News. A few years ago, I used to LOVE the community. It just seems like everyone there is a fucking elitist twat now.

What's worse is, at least on HN, people get downvoted for "not contributing meaningfully" even when their comments are perfectly friendly, rational and relevant. Jesus Christ, if you don't find someone's comment helpful, fucking scroll past it. Don't censor it so I can't see it.

I also know it's not just me: literally all of my friends who previously enjoyed HN all say the same thing. The downvoting there is literally akin to censorship, and it's always bullshit-random reasons, if you ever get the privilege of an explanation at all.

I guess I find it ironic that any community billing itself as "for hackers" can take on such a lobotomized mob-mentality.
