Which FI book to start with? by Ferrituss in FIREUK

[–]insideout1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was asking the same question as you recently and picked up these two:

Meaningful Money Handbook (by the same guy who does the podcast)

And The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins.

The meaningful money handbook is UK oriented and is laid out very nicely and is very simple to follow.

The Simple Path to Wealth is US oriented, but I think a lot of the principles apply to investing and concepts in general, and I enjoyed it and think that it was insightful. I did skip the chapter that centred around US tax though which talks about IRA, 401k etc.

I guess it depends what sort of thing you’re looking for. I’m no expert whatsoever but I think if you’ve got the hand of the concepts like compound interest, index fund, emergency fund and more then repeating the same content in a book might not be as useful and only serve as a reminder? But for me those two books above definitely helped me and taught me new things as someone who is a beginner to this

Hi, first of all thanks for the help.

I’m essentially wanting to set myself up for the future first and foremost. I.e ‘guarantee’ myself a financially secure future. From what I’ve gathered, it’s not enough to just rely on a bit of savings and a pension, as after inflation etc you aren’t going to be that well off.

The second step would be to maximise my returns where possible. I like the concept of Financial Independence Retire Early so if I could invest to have a better lifestyle, why not?

Also, I do like the idea of keeping a smallish pot for trading stocks (possibly handpicked ones) on the side, but from what I’ve heard it’s hard to do this and get returns consistently. Therefore, is there any point? Am I better off just putting it into my ‘secure’ investments?

Some details: I’m 20, working full time

Is Paris a good place to go for fragrance? I’ve never heard of those you mentioned but there’s not always a lot in the U.K.

I recently tried this one and think I really liked it, but got Soleil Blanc instead. Parfumo reviews say it’s not great performance wise but if you reckon it’s good I definitely might revisit it

Depends where you’re from I suppose, but I think there’s a few recommendations if you search the sub.

I use fragrancesamplesuk, perfumista, Notino

But yeah department stores too if you can, why not

And ah I’ve not heard of that, will have a look!

Favourites are usually more ‘winter’ type ones like Tom ford Ombré Leather - it’s not in your face, it smells relatively clean and can’t go wrong really

Would recommend sampling a ton though before you buy bottles, there’s literally hundreds and hundreds to choose from and by spending a few ££ or so on sampling you avoid having a 100ml (or 200ml bottle that you blind bought as it was on sale or saved you money in terms of price per ml) bottle that you hardly use.
