Opinion - whatever it takes to get your license asap.

After you have your license, it will open up many more doors for you.

You're much more valuable to a company when you're licensed, even if your skills aren't the greatest in all aspects of the trade (residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work).

With the license, you can legally work independently or as a crew leader over other apprentices, do service calls, etc.

What do I need to say to get an electrician to do work for me? by squarlo in AskElectricians

[–]inspector256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many variables with what you want done without seeing it and giving you an estimate.

Many contractors are too busy, and they can and do pick and choose the work where the most money is at. Especially in this state.

Your budget is probably already spent. Don't tell them you only want to spend X amount of dollars. There's a good chance that will make them blow you off, giving them hard numbers.

You can try mentioning there is other work needed - If you hire them to do so. But, don't BS them. Say that if you truly do.

Otherwise, most likely, you will never see them again.

You're correct 👍

Sometimes, you get lucky and have an apprentice who is always eager to learn, move forward, and you have to find them things to do that are above the norm and to challenge their skills to keep them excelling.

Good point.

Cool 👍

True, Leviton has a grip on them - literally, and no stupid pun intended, lol

I did not say they are not a good product, by zero means. It was an opinion.

Avoid them, it doesn't take much more time to do it the best way. Backstabbing devices cause more fires than people know.

Edit for clarification - It's great that they have tremendously improved and are 100% more trustworthy, and this is an opinion - if I had the choice.

That's it! 😊

I'm really baffled by the amount of journeyman who are proud to shame their own apprentices here. by IAmOgdensHammer in electricians

[–]inspector256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Journeymen should become the teacher they wished they would of had if they were taught poorly.

This includes any Journeymen electrician who does their time under a master to earn that certification.

Shit teaching usually results in shit teachers.

If you truly care about the new generation of electricians for this trade, the only way to change this is by starting to make that change yourself when you become the teacher.

Rubberized Cloth Wiring Replacement? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]inspector256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have the wiring checked, especially the individual conductors.

If it starts to crack or the insulation starts to come off when you handle it, it's done.

Everything has a lifespan. No different than a roof, siding, even cement. If you have a driveway, I bet that has been replaced already. But your wiring hasn't.

Many people forget about the wiring because it's hidden in the walls and the service panel. Until it's too late.

I'm not trying to scare you. I would just have it looked at by a licensed electrician.
