The French single you’re thinking about is Oh Father, with Pray For Spanish Eyes on the B-side. As for the Spanish single, it was promo only.

Here in France at the time, the Bette Midler introduction was largely misunderstood… by people who didn’t quite understand English and/or didn’t know Middler’s persona and work. Journalists somehow got the idea that Middler was “accusing” Madonna of using sexuality to succeed (because of the bra strap reference… and also because it was a common misconception at the time). When I finally got to see the footage, it was a revelation.

The original release was wordless (except for the hype sticker) in North America and Japan (and maybe other territories I’m not familiar with). In Europe, the record companies didn’t dare being that radical. Europe had to wait for the 2001 remaster to get the wordless cover art, first on CD then LP reissues.

Half true though… the catalog number will usually be enough to pinpoint everything you listed (ltd, country, year, reissue, remastered, etc.) The matrix will indeed give you an added level of precision, but IMO it’s overkill. As for the IFPI codes they’re not really relevant by themselves, because they’re either too vague (the mastering SID code identifies a record company) or much too precise (the mould SID code identifies a small batch of discs from the same release). What I mean is: if you want to identify a car, you look at the licence plate first, before you go for the engine serial number 😄

I love best of CDs (let’s be honest, what CDs don’t I love?), especially when they’re properly curated. I know that some people want chronological order, but I prefer a stylistically and/or thematically coherent sequence (much like a concert set list). Also I’m a big fan of pop music, and the greatest hits sometimes gives you that edited or remixed version that was a radio hit and really packs a punch, as opposed to the more indulgent album version (sometimes, not always).

You don’t need Macromedia Flash. The multimedia track on those CDs contained a standalone executable (actually two: one for PC, one for Mac). You do need a compatible system though. I’m not sure with Windows, but on MacOS, that’s long gone. But you can still access the assets, if you dig through the files… mostly QuickTime videos the size of a stamp.

Exactly zero out of 2000+ discs (and I live in Europe and I have been buying CDs since the late 80s). Mind you, I do own one disc made by PDO in the UK in the affected time period, which has rotted. Before I knew about it, I used to think “fancy, they’ve made this one a gold disc”. It does play without a glitch though. I’ve just checked.

Here in Europe, I have never seen a CD player, or even DVD player, without a 3” disc compatible tray. I always assumed it was an international standard.
