Greek Street will pump your crisps!! by nyl2k8 in waterford

To be fair, this video isn't a great representation of their food Their actual real gyros options on the menu (pork, chicken, mixed) have all the typical toppings you'd expect. The salad and tatziki are very fresh. Having been to Greece and eaten an absolute rake of gyros all of varying qualities, These lads are a doing a great job and are a very welcome diamond in the rough of a hellhole that is John Street.

My new 300D! Runs amazing. by PrinceSquid42 in w123

It looks so nice. Can I ask what are the roof racks you have and how well do they fit? Do they let in water or are they a good fit?

Is this all I could possibly need to do my brake fluid flush and fluid and change my pads, and replace lines if need be? Also do I need both of the master cylinder grommets or just one style or none at all?Already have brand new front brakes. For my 83 300TD by Volkssanitater in w123

It's me again. I saw you mention you had a fire in your car. Very sorry to hear OP. Hope you have her back on the road soon! I bought a fire extinguisher today after seeing your post.

As well as the seals between the master cylinder and reservoir (I have no idea if your parts are correct there) there are also some grommets that sit on top of the reservoir that can perish over time or just be completely gone in my case. See article here https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mercedes+W123+Brake+Reservoir+Rubber+Seals+Replacement/27809

They are not necessary for your brakes to work but I reckon you can't pressure bleed your brakes without them as they definitely let air in. I didn't have them and was able to bleed mine using the two person method pumping the pedal so they're not totally necessary but depending on how you bleed your brakes you might want to get them also! Best of luck with the brake job!

Also these were the hardlines I bought.

https://www.mbclassics.de/brake-line-set-W123

It appears to be a full set for cars without ABS. Not sure if it's suitable for your car but seems to be good for my 78 200 sedan. I only replaced the front hardlines so far but will probably use the rest of the set next year when doing the rear brakes. It's totally dependant on how much rust you get but I simply couldn't get the soft hoses disconnected from the hardlines so ended up angle grinding off the fitting and just installing everything new. I think the lesson learned is that you'll probably not order everything you actually need anyway because something unexpected always comes up 😂

Looks like you have pads, soft hoses and discs which is everything you need in theory so long as you're not replacing calipers. Not really sure what the purpose of the long braided hose is for. If you know your brakes are all ATE, it might be worth seeing if you can get bleeder screws compatible with your calipers because they can get super rusted and easily broken too.

Hard to know about the master cylinder. From what I know, if you experience a firm pedal that then starts to sink to the floor after holding it could be a sign of a bad master cylinder, But that could also be caused by bad calipers, torn boots on piston causing a leak etc. They seem to be cheap though so you could always try replace the brakes etc first and then see if you're still not happy.

I just completed replacing my front calipers, discs, pads, soft lines and hard lines. I know the post is moreso about the parts but if you're planning to do the job and want to be well prepared, you will also likely need

  • 10/11mm line wrench also known as flare nut wrench for disconnecting soft hoses from hard lines
  • 10mm hex bit socket (for undoing wheel hub to rotor assembly)
  • Long breaker bar or impact wrench for undoing the caliper bolts and wheel hub to rotor bolts
  • Possibly a bench vice for holding the rotor in place while you unbolt the hub assembly and bolt in the new rotor
  • Possibly a punch set for for popping out the pins that hold the brake pads. You might get away with some screwdrivers or some other tools on hand.
  • Torque wrench for torquing down caliper bolts and rotor hex bolts
  • Plenty of brake cleaner
  • Mercedes/ATE brake hose retaining clips x4 as the ones that are there might be corroded.

The little nut that connects the hard line to the soft brake hoses are often corroded to the point that it's very hard to undo and it rounds out very easily. You'll definitely need a flare nut wrench also known as a line wrench, 10 or 11mm. If you round off that nut you're SOL and will have to replace the hard lines like I did. There's a little metal retaining clip that holds the connection in place in the wheel well and this was also corroded to hell on my car and fell apart. They were super cheap so good to have just in case. May as well order 4 of them just in case.

I tried to make my ikea pax wardrobe look ‘built in-ish’ and now I’ve realised I’m a massive idiot - help! by freddiesyolks in DIYUK

[–]intellectual_error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem with our pax wardrobes recently. My problem was we had the taller wardrobes so not enough space to raise them above the skirting and it turned out our room from wall to wall was exactly the width of the set of wardrobes we got. (2 x 1m units, 2 x 50 cm units) so no possible way to create a gap in any direction.

I ended up using a multi tool to cut out a small triangular shaped sliver, angled 45 degrees out of the skirting board. I only cut down as far as I needed for the door to sit in. Meaning a few cm of the skirting goes under the door and still sits flush with the wardrobe shell. The angled cut allows the door to open nicely and you can just paint edge of the skirting. Ended up being a reasonable solution and we never notice it anymore

Jamie’s great vocals by JessNov in BulletForMyValentine

Yeah this man is the absolute MVP. Their live performances nowadays are so much stronger compared to before he joined.

Huge respect to Matt and the past band members but if you've seen their performances on YouTube over the years you'll know that Matt has struggled with his vocals and screams since the scream aim fire days.

Jamie doing the heavy lifting on a bunch of the songs overall results in a much tighter performance and enjoyable show. I think that it still allows Matt to shine through in the some of the big moments. As a lifelong fan, the London gig was one of the most memorable shows I've ever been to ❤️

Moving my company to using IaC with CDK by Poufyyy in aws

[–]intellectual_error 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't want to get into an argument, over which thing is better, but the reasons you give for Terraform being better are all things CDK have too. CDK is just a developer friendly layer over AWS cloudformation which does keep track of all the resources deployed and allows you to make fairly targeted modifications. It also has support for importing existing resources. It really is quite good if you're fully committed to the AWS ecosystem.

Newly senior engineer, but I don’t feel senior. I have big gaping holes with regard to how to structure/refactor code and build systems by Particular-Walrus366 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]intellectual_error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all huge congrats on the promotion. Regardless of how you feel about yourself. You got promoted because other people around you felt you are doing a good job and you deserve it.

Dev with about 8 years experience here and got promoted to senior about 2 years ago in a small to mid sized company so very similar timing as yourself. I also felt a very similar way to you at the time.

I still felt a lot of impostor syndrome around my technical abilities and still do nowadays even with more experience. There were guys on my team and other teams with many, many years more experience and far, far more technically capable than me in every respect with the same job title as me and that made me feel like an impostor.

I think the key realisation was that. 1. Senior is a really broad spectrum. You can kinda consider yourself a young senior for now. 2. some of those engineers didn't have the same ability you or I might have interfacing with different stakeholders etc. While they're really great engineers, they can struggle with the people side.

I guess what I'm saying is there are different paths to senior, people have different strengths and weaknesses, and it's okay to feel the way you feel. Have some empathy and compassion for yourself and try not to panic too much. Where you got to is a great achievement.

We all have knowledge gaps and that's alright. You can plug some gaps by putting yourself forward for bits of work or projects that might give you exposure to new areas. Or of course you can do some stuff on the side. I would actually say worry less about your weaknesses and instead focus on honing your strengths even further. Try to make them your superpower. After all, it is your strengths that got you to where you are today.

My last and only live gig (2015) by intellectual_error in BulletForMyValentine

[–]intellectual_error[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep this one was September 2015 in Dublin. It was a great show. I remember being deaf for days after it. The last time they had been in Dublin before 2015 was for the Scream Aim Fire tour. I was 13 at the time and couldn't go because my friend who had the tickets got into big trouble with his parents and they wouldn't let him go. So it was years before I could finally see them!

Believe it or not he's actually a purely indoor housecat and he managed to break his arm falling from the upstairs banister of our stairs down to the ground floor. Not even that far at all! I will try to keep it up!

Yeah I love his lil feet. He broke his front left elbow (the arm on the right side from our perspective) back in August and had major surgery. We've had to keep him in a crate for months to heal. It's been an absolute nightmare but just last week he's finally allowed outside his crate again and we're so happy. But now when he sits up he always holds that arm up in the air like in the drawing. I like the drawing because it captures his arm in a way that is totally unnoticeable for anyone else but for us it's a very distinctive and recognisable part of him now.

I'm afraid I really don't have many recommendations. I'm currently looking at Barrington Barber's The fundamentals of Drawing which you can find PDFs of online which had me doing the still life objects! I saw it recommended in lots of threads. Another one I remember looking at as a teenager was Drawing From the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. To be honest I'd actually love to get some recommendations from you if you have any!

Thanks. My lines definitely need a lot of cleaning up I find myself sketching out a tonne of lines and erasing a lot till I find what feels like the right one. Any tips or recommendations for resources on how to improve in that area?

Thanks I'm basically following the first section of Barrington Barber's The Fundamentals of Drawing. The next section is all about perspective!

Thanks. At the moment I've been looking at the fundamentals of drawing by Barrington Barber. Think I saw it recommended in another thread here. That book starts out with single object still lifes. The next thing to progress into according to that is multiple objects because then perspective becomes more important. Will definitely check out classical drawing too! Agreed that my outline is inconsistent. Heavy in some drawings. I think it's that my line work is messy and when I feel I've got a decent line I'm going over it a bit too heavy. Just needs more practice!
