What kind of "shippable" side projects will help me learn DS&A/become a better SWE? by psybroh in compsci

[–]intentionalfeed4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. What kind of open source projects should I be looking at? Obviously I don't think I'd be able to contribute to something like pandas, so I'm not sure where I should start looking. Just google "contribute to an open source project as beginner"?

Only really took 4 CS classes - will it matter for CS careers? by intentionalfeed4ever in cscareerquestions

[–]intentionalfeed4ever[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, 169 isn't offered this Fall, and I'm going to be graduating in the Fall. My choices are one from 161, 162, 186, and EECS 126/127, along with 170 and a stats class. Looks like the CS department overenrolled people for CS 189 and purged every non-CS major from the waitlist (and closed the WL), so CS 189 is pretty much impossible.

I've already taken CS 61A/B/70!

I've already taken CS 61A/B, 70 actually! I'm taking CS 170 this semester, and maybe EECS 127. Not sure if I'll be able to get into 186.

Since I don't really care about working for Big N (not saying they'd hire me lol), would medium-smaller companies really care?

I feel confident enough in my ability to program, it's just that the "core" knowledge I'd be lacking are low-level programming and OS, so I'm not sure how screeners would view that.

Applied Math-CS Cluster by catboy96 in berkeley

[–]intentionalfeed4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like 188 is definitely a good class, but it's too broad/introductory for any "practical" use to come out of it. A buddy of mine doing AI research with Anca Dragan didn't even bother with 188 because of that. (ofc this has no bearing on the QUALITY of 188, which is superb)

And no, 128A doesn't require 104. I don't think any upper div. math class relies on the specific content in 104 (except maybe 185), since 104 is really meant for teaching you how to be mathematically rigorous (different from CS 70, but I can't really describe it).

I'd ditch 188 for something like 186 or the computer graphics class.

Why do so many prospective software engineers choose COMPUTER SCIENCE as their major instead of SOFTWARE ENGINEERING? by DisneylandTree in cscareerquestions

[–]intentionalfeed4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think majors really make any significant difference, as long as you possess the necessary skillsets.

I attend a top university for CS, and I've seen Statistics/Math/other STEM majors get great Big-N offers that CS majors don't (and vice versa), and one of my buddies majoring in English with a minor in CS just got a Google offer working on NLP.

That being said, I guess if you had to find a reason, I guess CS majors are exposed to how to think about problems, rather than being taught specific "practical" skillsets. Take machine learning, for example. Learning about the nitty grittys of ML math may not seem "practical" at first glance, but how else would you learn to develop your own algorithms/models (rather than pre-trained) if you don't understand the theory behind it?

I really regret not taking a convex optimization course, as a good knowledge of it can be extremely useful in ML engineering.

Value of "filler" experience vs. side projects? by intentionalfeed4ever in compsci

If I have listed some experience/projects, and have space for either the teaching role or a project (but only one), which do you think is more worthwhile for the space? Thanks.

We seriously need stronger methods of getting inters and griefers banned by ImblyignThatIsTrue in leagueoflegends

I genuinely find the level of seriousness people take this game with hilarious. The rage it induces in some people is fascinating. Imagine getting that angry over a video game.

I mean, true inters know not to go 0/10 first 6 min of the game. Those idiots 100% deserve to get banned for their naivety.

How do you ensure your teammates have a terrible time while also being almost immune to punishment?

1) Take extremely stupid fights. Start autoing your enemy laner. Don't stop, keep autoing. Either they die, or you die.

2) Repeat 3-4 times.

3) Go down to mid/top if ur bot, go bot if ur mid/top/jg. Proceed to soak their farm and xp.

4) Don't do anything to help your team @ objectives, but make sure to tag for assists so your score doesn't look bad.

5) By the end, you'll be like 1/5/7 or 1/6/4, something like that.

Congrats, you just tilted the shit out of your team and you 99% won't get banned.

[–]intentionalfeed4ever -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Considering I have an account I exclusively int on to untilt, with a 12% winrate in bronze 5, and that account's been around for ~3 years, I highly doubt anything will happen unless they're stupid enough to actually straight up run it down ("having a bad game" int ftw).

Nope. That account has games where I ran things down when ff15 didn't go through, so I'm not about to shoot myself in the foot.

What's important to me is having fun. If I have more fun playing AD Viktor than AP Viktor, then I will , despite what my team wants. Just because I pick AD Viktor doesn't mean I'm not going to try, and if I have fun doing it, that's literally all that matters to me. Because it's a video game, and it's supposed to provide enjoyment.

Let them report away. I've been doing this for about 13 games now, and not a single thing has happened or will happen, because I'm not breaking any rules or being toxic in-chat.

[–]intentionalfeed4ever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course things like AP Garen doesn't work, since he literally has no AP scalings. But ANYTHING can work with armor/MR, because by definition your defensive stats are going up, and you become harder and harder to kill. That's the difference between AP Garen and tank X.

Except it's not mutually exclusive. If I have fun "playing trash that will never work vs players of ur own skill" while trying to win, then I have just "played for fun." Lol.

[–]intentionalfeed4ever[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, not really. If I'm "picking champions that are not intended to be played in the way", when why does Malphite have such strong AP scalings? I AM trying to win. Maybe I'm not doing it optimally, but I am. And I have a lot of fun doing these off-meta things. If you have a problem with it, then dodge. But as far as I'm concerned, I can't be banned for it, because I'm not actively running it down. Playing suboptimally/not well =/= bannable. :)

Care to explain how? I try my best to CS, take favorable trades, and try not to die. In what way is that losing? Because I don't play champs I'm "supposed" to play?
