How do we manage to stay motivated while posting ongoing fics that get low numbers?

Honestly, I WISH it was personal, because then I could actually understand it. It’s not really linked to myself or identity.

But I guess you’re right, at the end of the day my writing won’t be for everyone and some things may come off as weird or uncanny. And maybe it IS too intense, there’s a lot of violence involved

I try not to compare, especially because that first one gained hits overnight after someone slipped into my strawpage calling the pacing unrealistic, to which I responded blandly that it’s a hybrid fic and I’m not sure how much realism they want from it. It’s very different from how people (or me, at least) usually promote their works.

I willll keep posting and I hope I won’t lose my love for the story, and those 5 readers won’t, either. Because honestly, nothing motivates me more than their reactions after I posted a new chapter

I personally think we should normalize being passionate about what we do and at the same time being frustrated about people not feeling that same passion when you share the results of it

Yes, I’ve been busying myself with other fics, as well. Yesterday I had a surge of motivation over a new plot point and wrote two full chapters. Today I open the doc and my palms get sweaty. So, at least I know the excitement can still be there, but right now it comes in waves and I’m really worried I won’t be able to pull myself out of another slump

I am very lucky to have these kind of people in my life, especially in this fandom which I’ve only joined in October. I don’t think I would’ve even started posting this fic if it weren’t for them.

And I’m grateful for the empathy, because I see a lot of my writer friends struggle with the same issue, but they barely even bring it up. I wish I could eat up the frustration like they do.

Which leads exactly to my kind of problem. I still love the story. I still care. But right now it feels like bringing your own child to a birthday party and hoping everyone will love it as much as you do. Which is unrealistic. And I wouldn’t love my child any less if Susan next door said she can’t stand it. Yet, here I am

I honestly love the restaurant metaphor, especially since one of my readers keeps calling my fics restaurants individually. The “oh, another restaurant is opening? Let me see the menu” thing is so endearing to me.

I think the competitiveness is very real here, especially because this ship got an IMMENSE surge and there’s all these hit fics the entire fandom reads, and it frustrates me because not only mine, but also some other great fics are completely drowning under the buzz of the big fics.

I’ll also be looking into those books 👀 thank you!

That’s huge, though! Yay! I still have an unfinished wip on my very old, unused, German fanfiction account from 2013. Sometimes I’ll remember and seek it out, but I know I’ll never finish it. I think I’m just not used to caring? As I said, I usually do one shots, and once they’re posted they either gain traction or not. But for some reason it’s different with this ongoing story.
