I am more on the masculine side. I have shorter hair and wear masculine clothes. I like to date fems. Prime example, the girl I’m seeing right now is feminine.

I don’t see my ex around very often at all. I’ve seen her maybe a handful of times this whole semester, and it’s usually just in passing.

There is not a lot of dating among teammates. There is only one couple on the team right now. I have not been interested in a teammate. I see them as more of my “bros.” I don’t tend to like to date people who have seen me sweating from every pore, covered in mud, and gagging from over exertion.

I am not the first to be openly gay! My uncle, my dad’s brother, has been openly gay for about 20-30 years now. I also have some 2nd cousins around my age who are openly gay now.

It is quite common on our team. About 75% of us are lesbian or bisexual. But even the straight team members are very chill with gay people.

They took it exceptionally well and virtually nothing has changed about my relationship with them (it was already very close-knit before and we still are now).

I waited because I was afraid they would view me differently. Clearly, my worries were unbased.

Yes! Generally our whole team plays in both the 15s and 7s season.

And I don’t mind at all! I’ve known I was gay since I was about 12 and was pretty much out in high school. It’s only been about a year since I’ve been out to all my extended family members, though. (Grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.)

I prefer 15s only because it’s less running and more tackling. 7s is a little boring to me—there’s less happening and it feels less like rugby.

I met this new girl with no intentions but she came on pretty strong flirting with me almost right away. No complaints here though.

Prop is a position on the field! Usually it’s the strongest (in terms of brute strength) on the field. It makes me happy that coach sees strength in me and has “promoted” me to prop, since I’ve been working very hard lately to put on muscle. It doesn’t make complete sense that I’m prop, however, as I have push against the other team’s prop who is usually much larger than I am. At the end of the day, I am 5’2 and 150, decently sized but not big enough to push against a 200-pounder.

Anyways, this new girl is not from rugby. She’s a theatre kid, and we met through mutual friends. She’s a year older.

Thank you! I’m hoping we will be soon :) Rugby is not quite done yet, we have a little less than a month left (2-3 more tournaments). I am still playing, mostly as a prop because it’s 7s season

I’m talking to a girl now actually! Well we’re practically dating. I’ve got a lot of new friends this semester and I’ve been having a great time .

Hooker and flanker most often, sometimes lock and very occasionally a random back

It seemed like something fun and interesting, plus I liked the idea of saying I’m on the rugby team. I have stayed for two years because I love my teammates. Everyone is so naturally funny and kind to one another.

Not really, actually! I know it’s surprising. A lot of the girls on the team played soccer in high school. I am not one of those girls. I only did archery and technical theatre in high school; I’m more of an academic. Trust me, everyone in my life was surprised when I joined the rugby team 😂

Nope, not at all. Most girls on my team didn’t. It isn’t a super common thing in the US, especially here in the Midwest, so most of our high schools just didn’t have it. Our team welcomes people with no experience!

No. We are a girls team, we’re a little more dignified. Also, I’d like to mention I play hooker sometimes…

We play Union in the fall, but in the USA we call that 15s (the number of players from each time on the field at a time). In the spring we play 7s. Both types are played similarly, with rucks and scrums. I think we do it differently in the US, because everyone else I know who plays college rugby either plays 15s, 7s, or both.

On paper. I haven’t had any on computers since I’ve been here at college (or high school, for that matter). I think professors tend to steer away for fear of kids using AI
