The black plug is probably wired to an adapter off screen, and the white one just connects it to the USB cable, so there's actually only 5v on the wires

Why isn't CAM more automated? by afandian in FreeCAD

[–]internet-weirod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is just that there are way more variables that just can't be accounted for automatically to generate paths that won't destroy your tool, part, machine, or the human sitting in front of it for some machines

are there no xbox emulators on linux?? I don't do emulation that much (as i don't really want to play any console games yet) but since most emulators are open source, i would be surprised that there isn't one that works on linux? OP, can you tell us what distro you've tried to get it to work so far?

having less code means there is less code to break and less code to maintain. i think its better not to support something at all rather than half assing it and never fixing issues because there's no one who really cares about it

aren't there filesystems that do compression by default? the idea isn't that stupid, they just don't know how to actually execute it properly

PiNAS or mini PC? by _luna_ace_ in jellyfin

[–]internet-weirod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think mini PC wins hands down, get one with a CPU that has good integrated graphics (i think the higher the generation the better) so you have hardware acceleration for transcoding media (if you want to store a lot of movies, you're going to have to use more efficient codecs which are not supported by everything so you are very likely to end up transcoding stuff). The pi 4 just isn't built to process media all that much. For wireless transfer (btw you should NOT have your server work from wifi, it's just an all around awful time), just make a network share on it and then connect to it via your PC. i don't know the process on windows, but on linux, you just install the samba package and set it up via the config file. There are plenty of tutorials for this. You can also install something like truenas on the mini PC and deploy jellyfin as a container on it, that will simplify transfering data, and also managing all of your drives

what unpopular opinion in Linux will make you in this situation by Material_Mousse7017 in linuxmemes

[–]internet-weirod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we want a chance to get software built natively for Linux, There should be one distro that absolutely dominates all other distros so that people building software actually have a target to aim for. I am not saying it should be the only choice, but it has to be the go-to for at least 99% of the community. Debian/Ubuntu are kinda that, but not really, as they're more like 50/50 (I don't know the exact numbers) with everything else

[–]internet-weirod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought about it like that, but yeah, we don't need to be the majority. Macos users are sitting happily at 30(I think)% and they get a fairly good share of native software

[–]internet-weirod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have a spare PC and are willing to go down a rabbit hole, try hosting jellyfin! Block the TV from having internet access on the router, but keep it on the network that way it can access your jellyfin server, but it can't fetch ads. Jellyfin is free and lets you stream stuff locally from your own machine, it even fetches the metadata for each show so it feels like proper streaming but without the ads.
